2013 BMW 320i: The Essence of What Makes the 3-series Great—For Less Money [2013 Detroit Auto Show]

The quintessential sports sedan is becoming a bit more accessible: BMW is adding the entry-level 320i to its portfolio for 2013. Priced from $33,445 and driven by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four, the 320i sacrifices power, but still comes in a package that remains one of our all-time favorites. READ MORE ››

2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250 Photos and Info: Benz’s Neonatal CLS-class Debuts [2013 Detroit Auto Show]

Mercedes-Benz is headed downmarket—all the way down to front-drive town, population: Perceptions of Cheapness. Rather than partition its lineup with separate brands for pushers and pullers, Mercedes is just going to make sure that nobody cares which end propels its new smallest-ever U.S. offering by making it beautiful. That’s why the CLA250 debuting at the Detroit auto show—or, rather, an event nearby—looks like a fetal CLS-class. READ MORE ››

Mercedes E63 AMG 2013: Official Picture Ahead of Detroit Unveiling

The pictures seen here of the new Mercedes E63 AMG, which were first released on AMG’s Facebook page, offer a final glimpse of the car ahead of its 2013 Detroit Auto Show launch. Aside from the ‘V8 Biturbo’ badge on the front wings, most of the changes can be found under the bonnet. The 5.5 litre V8 has been uprated to produce 540hp and an electronically limited 155mph. A 0 to 62mph time of 4.2 seconds is expected from the twin turbo powerplant and fuel economy of 28.8mpg is claimed. Start/stop technology adds to the economy and the AMG’s Speedshift seven-speed auto box should also aid speed and fuel mileage. Along with the work that AMG have carried out on the executive saloon, alterations like the single headlight with integrated LEDs are thanks to mid-life revisions to the E-Class that Mercedes will release in the spring. It’s a shame that there is no 4MATIC option for owners in the UK as there will be for the rest of Europe, but saloon and estate versions will be sold when the…

Volvo’s “Little Red” Commercial Is a Good Example of the Tail Wagging the Wolf [The Ad Section]

Award-winning ad man-cum-auto journalist Don Klein knows a good (or bad) car commercial when he sees one; the Ad Section is his space to tell you what he thinks of the latest spots. The ad’s rating is depicted via the shift pattern at the bottom, but everyone has an opinion when it comes to advertising, so hit Backfires below and tell us what you think, too. Upon casual viewing, Volvo’s S60 commercial appears simply to be a modern take on an old fairy tale wherein good triumphs over evil. The commercial opens in a dark, spooky forest. Cut to distant headlights piercing the misty fog. A series of beauty shots reveals they’re coming from a blood red S60 being driven by a handsome young father. While all this is taking place, we hear Sam the Sham and the Pharaoh’s iconic ’60s hit “Li’l Red Riding Hood,” freshly (and excellently) covered by Laura Gibson. Suddenly the Volvo screeches to a halt as it encounters a wolf roadblock. Well, it consists of just one wolf, but this particular…

2013 Porsche Boxster S PDK Tested: A Bargain Exotic with a Mighty Fine Automatic

Remote_image_befa8035e6.big For those of you who might have been encased in amber the past 15 years or perhaps stuck in a universe of flying dirigibles, a golden Statue of Liberty, and Sony Betamax VCRs, we’d like to welcome you to the other side. The bad news: During your absence, all the ten-penny mid-engined sportsters such as the Lotus Elise and the Toyota MR2 have been superseded by exotics with entomological monikers and six-figure price tags. All, that is, but the Porsche Boxster, which launched around the time you entered hibernation.READ MORE ››

Fiat 500S

The Fiat 500S is meant to express a more youthful and unconventional take on the popular Italian hatch, which in this ‘S’ variant is just more sporty and aggressive than ever. This new trim comes with a number of pretty interesting standard features and will be made available for both the 500 and 500C, those powered by the 69 hp 1.2-liter, the 85 hp 0.9 TwinAir, the 100hp 1.4 Multijet and the 95 hp 1.3-liter. Aesthetically speaking, on the outside the Fiat 500S is characterized by a spoiler at the rear, side skirts, newly designed bumpers, tinted windows, 15-inch alloy wheels (though a 16-inch set is also available on request) and the special dark chrome finish. As for the passenger compartment, we have black sports seats with red stitching, ‘500S’ logos on the backrests, racing steering wheel, specifically dedicated gear knob and a Matt Silver finish for the dashboard. Standard equipment includes manual air conditioning, Blue&Me info-tainment system with commands at the…

BMW 3-Series F30 by Prior Design

After revealing its own interpretation of the Audi R8, Prior Design launches a new bodykit dedicated to the BMW 3-Series F30. The package includes a few cosmetic changes intended to enhance the aesthetics of the car without spoiling the essence of a fashionable German sedan. More specifically, this kit provides for newly designed front and rear bumpers (the former with some huge air-intakes which are pretty reminiscent of the M1 Coupe, the latter with integrated diffuser), a matte black lip spoiler, trunk lid spoiler, new skirts and pair of black stripes on the sides with the name and logo of the tuner. Please note that the BMW 3 Series F30 has been developed on a new platform that’s quite different from the one which spawned the previous generation: the car in now 93 mm longer, which also translated into a longer wheelbase and consequent advantages in terms of both stability at high speeds and passenger compartment habitability. Front and rear tracks got wider too – by 37 and 47…

2014 Mercedes CLA: The First Official Pictures

Following on from the spy shots that we brought you earlier in the month, these are the first official images of the Mercedes CLA that will take its bow at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. The baby saloon retains a lot of the design elements that were present in the Concept Style Coupe, which was displayed at 2012 Beijing Auto Show, including the sloping roofline that gives the saloon a coupe look. The car is based on the same platform as the A-Class, and like the entry-level Merc it will be available as a front wheel drive. All-wheel drive 4Matic versions will also be offered along with a choice of three petrol and four diesel engines developing anywhere from 121bhp to 207bhp. The range topping CLA 45 will use the 2.0 litre turbo found in the A45 AMG, so it will reach 62mph from a standing start in just 5.0 seconds and top out at an electronically limited 155mph. More details will follow in January. Mercedes CLA: the first official pictures 2014 Mercedes CLA: The First Official…

2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA Is A Stylish New Entry-Level Model 1

Every premium manufacturer is on a push for global sales volume. Most industry observers agree that a majority of future growth is going to come from entry-level small cars. And by entry-level we mean new models to slot in below the existing compact class like the BMW 3-series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Mercedes has developed a new platform, called the Mercedes Front Architecture (MFA) that will underpin an array of new models. MFA gets its name due to the fact that it is geared toward front-wheel drive vehicles. The first cars to debut on this platform were the A- and B-Class. When the A-Class launched we really hoped that Mercedes would bring it to the United States, but Mercedes had other plans. Those other plans consist of the CLA sedan and an upcoming small crossover. The CLA has been spied uncovered before, and now new press shots have leaked out on the internet. The CLA looks like we expected it to – much like the concept and a swoopy sedan version of A-Class. Or in…

Dashing Through the Snow—In a V-8 Diesel VW Touareg Wearing Tracks

So what if Christmas is over—you’d be singing “Jingle Bells” 24/7, too, if you had a sweet VW Touareg running snow tracks like the one posted a couple of weeks back to VW of Sweden’s Facebook page. Although our high-school Swedish (the class trips were the stuff of legend!) is a little rusty, the limited text accompanying the images indicates VW built the “Snowareg”—its official name—in 2011 and it packs a V-8 TDI with 335 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. Although a few early commenters contended that Snowareg is simply a Photoshop fantasy, VW makes a point of mentioning that they possess the documentation to back up its functionality. Plus, we’ve personally seen the same type of setup used in Yellowstone Park on full-size passenger vans. Renault Captur Leaked Sketches Show Production Version

These sketches show Renault’s new sports crossover model, the Captur that was revealed to the public at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Unfortunately much of the styling shown in the concept has been removed and what we’re left with is little more than an oversized Clio. That’s a shame because we loved the concept that was designed by Laurens Van den Acker, the Dutchmen whose work includes the stunning Mazda Nagare. Although the styling has changed dramatically, the new 1.6 DCI engine with 160bhp that was developed for the concept will go into production. In the prototype it was linked to an EDC transmission that produced a top speed of 131mph and a standing start to 62mph time of 8.0 seconds. The Clio’s engine range will also be on offer, so a 1.5 litre diesel and 1.2 litre petrol will complete the line-up. We’ll be able to get a proper look at the car when its launch next year. At the moment we expect that to happen at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, but Renault is keeping things under…

Alfa Romeo’s Product Plans Through 2016 Allegedly Leak Online

The Greek website Autoblog.gr claims to have obtained Alfa Romeo’s proposed product plans for the next four years, a time frame that includes the Italian automaker’s proposed return to the U.S. (Here’s our recent take on which vehicles you can expect here.) The plans are laid out on what appear to be presentation slides, and even though they are somewhat vague, the product breakdowns back up most of what we already knew about Alfa’s upcoming products, both globally and for the States. The documentation details the company’s aggressive product expansion through 2016 from its current, weak two-model lineup (the subcompact MiTo and compact Giulietta) to nine entries. The larger slide includes a graph placing nine new Alfa Romeo models on two axes based on price and size. There is one B-segment model, followed by one C-segment, three D-segment vehicles, one E-segment, and three “specialties.” The B-sized ride is the MiTo hatchback and the C is the Giulietta (which shares its…

Small changes for the Volvo XC60

Pretty insignificant. really… Just making sure it looks more like the all new V40. Which is not sold in the US. This is what we should have here in the US: the super good looking V60 wagon. Instead of the XC SUV. But in a dumbass move, Volvo decided, a few years ago, that they were not going to sale wagons in the US anymore. Who is running the show over there???

2013 Audi S5 3.0T Coupe Instrumented Test: Two Fewer Cylinders, One More Supercharger, No Regrets

When Audi’s S5 coupe debuted for 2008 as the first model built on the company’s B8 architecture, we demonstrated little restraint in praising its sexy sheetmetal and the 4.2-liter V-8 nestled between its front fenders. Styled by Italian-born design chief Walter de’Silva, the S5 and its slightly less potent A5 stablemate ushered in a new era of Audi design, one that has seen exterior aesthetics elevated among company priorities to a position alongside performance and technology. The duo was joined shortly thereafter by a sassy pair of cabriolet doppelgängers—albeit with a 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 in the S5 droptop rather than the S5 coupe’s hearty V-8—followed by the 2013 U.S. debut of the ultimate manifestation of performance within Audi’s 5 lineup, the quick but clinical RS5. 2013 Skoda Octavia: new details on engines

Skoda releases official details on the new engine line-up of the newly presented Octavia MY 2013. The saloon, built by the VW group, is offered with a choice of five engines, three petrol and two diesel units, all turbocharged and with direct fuel injection. The petrol range consists of a 1.2-litre TSI with either 86 and 105 HP, respectively producing 160 Nm and 175 Nm of torque. The next unit is a 1.4 TSI Green Tec with 140 HP and 250 Nm of torque. At the very top of the petrol offer is the 1 .8 TSI Green Tec that produces a generous 180 HP and 250 Nm. The diesel engines line-up is also well stocked: the entry level is the four-cylinder 1.6 TDI with 90 HP and 250 Nm, also offered in 105 and 110 HP versions (also Green Tec). The most powerful variant, however, is the four-cylinder turbodiesel 2.0 TDI Green Tec with 150 HP and 350 Nm of torque. It’s important to bear in mind that the new Octavia will be the first Skoda to feature devices such as Adaptive Cruise Assistant, the system…

Alfa Romeo Teases 4C Launch In 2013

It hasn’t been easy for Alpha Romeo fans here in the United States. Time and time again the brand has announced its United States arrival, only to have it pushed back further and further. One product – the 8C Competizione – did make it to U.S for a limited time. That car was supposed to lead a come back for the Alfa Romeo as a full-line automaker. However, that didn’t quite work out. In 2011 Alfa showed off the 4C concept at the Geneva motor show. The 4C was a small mid-engined roadster that followed in the design footsteps of the 8C. Needless to say, it gained a lot of fans not only for its styling, but also for its rumored specifications list. The car is rumored to have only 200 horsepower – but there’s a big caveat. Lightweight construction and advanced materials are supposed to keep the 4C under 2000 pounds. Now you get the point – lightweight, relatively inexpensive and extremely fast. Watch out Porsche! Most assumed that the 4C would be produced at some point, the question…
