Man first survived in the street fight shooting. Now - on a collapsing bridge

Seven years ago, police in North Carolina covered shooting victim Marcelo Cruz with a tarp, believing he was dead. He wasn't. Cruz survived the street fight shooting, but was left paralyzed from the waist down.Wednesday when he drove onto the Interstate 35W bridge just after 6 p.m., only to see the bridge in front of him start to shake -- and in a few short seconds, tumble down.Cruz saw 10 or 20 cars in front of him plunge into the water. He applied the brakes, but on the now-sloping bridge deck, he couldn't stop. Cruz swerved, and plowed his van into the concrete guard rail. It worked --

She's home for a mid deployment R&R and will be going back to Iraq for at least another 7 months. She's a medic near Ramadi, one of the most dangerous areas in Iraq.

it's not cruel! I'm a mom of two and I know what I'm talking about. Children they don't care if their mom is hero or not, at least not at this age, they just need her. It's a stupid and bad politics if parents must leave their children to protect their country.

Children also dont care if mom works or not, theyd much rather have their mom home with them, and yet millions of women with children that age work anyway.

perhaps Terri Gurrola wanted to serve her country. I for one am very grateful to her.

This of course said by a person who has no idea who they are replying to. They could be atheist, they could be hindu, muslim, agnostic. They could be a well educated person living in New York or Florida, or Washington State. To you however, they are a "bible-thumpin redneck". Well aren't you insightful? You are content to take a person with whom you know nothing about and then try and damn them with stupid ignorant comments, while at the same time demeaning an entire group of the American population that lives in certain geographic areas by calling them rednecks, and by going after people who have a strong belief in god by calling them bible thumpers.

Congratulations, you've taken all the worst qualities of being an American and rolled them up into yourself. Thank you for holding yourself up as an example of what we strive not to be.

Feel free to come back with some poorly thought out slam using profanity or generalizations. I would expect no less because you aren't demonstrating the intellect to have an intelligent conversation.

Fortunately this is a free country and as such people like you are allowed to post their stupidity. I would suggest to everyone else, rather than telling people like you that they can't post or aren't entitled to their opinions, that we instead look at them and use them as a tool for learning.

Actually, I think he has a point... the majority of the people that support(ed) the war in Iraq were from the 'deep south', which in today's internet slang would be considered an area full of 'rednecks'. Also, these so-called rednecks are more likely to believe the bible word for word as it was written, for example that Noah actually built an ark and took two of each species of animal on it, thus proving uneducated, ignorant and 'bible-thumping'. He is also correct on the civilian killing. According to current figures, over one million civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan have been killed by US soldiers.

P.S. You lose. Bible-thumper.

That is a very good response Jeff. I applaud you for pointing out the facts and burning him to a point that he cannot return.

I think that she may have made a sad mistake to leave her child at such a young age, especially to leave to a place where she will probably die.

So: "serve her country", huh? How does killing civilians halfway around the world "serve her country"? Fucking ignorant bible-thumpin redneck.

This has some relevance and instead of serving her country she should take care of her family.

She VOLUNTEERED! Why is it a tragedy when people are required to serve and fulfill their duties that they have been paid to do. This is my problem with the Reserve friends of mine who laughed about cake money from the government to run around a play army two weeks per year and one weekend per month. The government kept up its part of the deal, now it's their turn.

Counselor's are a big reason why this country is getting more screwed up everyday. Mommy and daddy whipped their children for doing wrong but yet it scar's them for life and makes them socially unacceptable and They end up pleading "not guilty by reason of insanity". The counselor's need to be canceled for all the b/s they put in children's and adult's mind.

Ok, obviously you don't know anybody in the military (who by the way serves the commander and chief, regardless of politics). I have been in for over 10 years now (that includes the Clinton administration). I have worked beside, with and for thousands of veterans who would unanimously agree that we can’t wait for the day where a free nation such as America does not need a military. But, there are plenty of shitheads out there who would love to see America and many of it’s western partners (and eastern too) fall on their own swords and decapitate them selves. There is a 90% chance that somebody in your family, be it a father, grandfather or uncle etc… served in World War 2. Their sole purpose was to kill and stop their enemies. By your ignorant comment above, I am guessing that you are saying that they had no honor in what they did in the 1940s.

Soldiers are heros. They were instructed to go to war, they did not choose it, it was chosen for them. If they don't go, they go to prison. If it weren't for soldiers who volunteer to join, your sorry ass would probably be drafted. So be grateful, you ingrate! She probably had her child AFTER she already signed up for 8 years minimum! If they were fightin' on American soil, you would be impacted directly. So before you go on with such comments about bringin' that war over here, think about it for a second - because such cowards could not handle a war right in front of their eyes. Choose your words, and your battles a lil' more wisely nex time.

Geez, it's funny how everyone bandy's around the word "hero" so readily. These American hero's with 21 century technology are getting their Heroic asses kicked by a ragtag bunch of amateur ill equipped sheep shaggers still living in the 12th century hiding in holes in the ground, so I guess in order to feel better about the ass whoppin it's necessary to call em all hero's. Just pull all the troops out & nuke the place. The Pilot will be a hero too!

If everyone is called a "Hero" for merely showing up for work, then what distinction of Honor do you use to describe someone who distinguishes themselves by exceptional courage, nobility and strength. If everyone including the soldier whose job it is to inflate tires on the Jeeps is a Hero, then how do you celebrate others for their extraordinarily bold exploits? Do you call them superheroes!
