it lives in Africa in the swamps of the Sudan and although there are not many left in the world (probably a few thousand at most) it is not extinct.

yeah, it's a Shoebill. Certainly not extinct, they still have specimens in London Zoo, and in Cincinnati Zoo, Ohio. Cites listed it as Vulnerable, meaning that its habitat is under threat, but it is not verging on extinct yet. http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoebill for more information :)

It's the so-called Shoebill, a huge bird from Africa

Great Pics.. I remember washing and feeding the elephants in Dublin Zoo back in the 70's when I was a kid. I used to bring my little sister with me during the school holidays and we did it with long brushes and fed the penguins too. People think Im lying when I tell them I did it, but like the above pics, you could really get up close and personal in those days before personal insurance and the modern "claim culture" took hold. Ah.... The good old days ! LOL Valerie - Dublin- Ireland

I have just recovered a load of old pics from my parents old house and these are very similar - they really are great, and though some of them appear to have been contrived they are nontheless great icons of a time gone by. Where do you see Rhinos in a pen like that

Wow. What's most amazing is how trumendousely far zoos have come in recent years. I would hate to be an animal in one of those pens back then. Terrible conditions, but what great archives!

The shoebill is not extinct, but is almost prehistoric. There is a breeding pair at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo.

I have to disagree, they don't seem . . . "right" . . . they seem sad. That humans, the "compassionate, intelligent species" would alow such domination over our once-wild cousins. At least we have made progress.

And fyi, alot is not a word: it's A lot

Thanks for pointing that out. By the way, 'trumendousely' isn't a word either. It's 'tremendously'.

In case anyone cares, the group of people looking at the penguins passing, include the then Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret. (The two girls without hats!) I would estimate about 1936-7

I am sorry to dissapoiny u ppl but some of these picture are 100% fakes. It they were taken at that time, some pics wouldnt look like that. For instance the jumping thingy above the guardian is far too sharpley taken, imposible fot the techology of that period.Next is that fax on turtles back,it is too focused as it was implemented from a higher res pic.Samo goes for that record player that stands out near a lions cage. The creator choosed B+W to make pics look more realistic.BTW nooone that likes animals climb their backs to wash them,it was done with large scalings. The pic with the panda is also imposible cuz kids were never alowed to enter cages, neither were those litle animals let out side of it.Imagine what would happen to a child playing with a lion cub next to its mother....fake XD

you mean the gazelle? I don't know much about the capabilities of the technology of that period so I can't really argue with you about it. But I can tell you that the elephant wouldn't mind a man standing on his back and brushing him. Just look at the Indian elephant and their "companions".

yea but the Indian elephants and their mahuts(companions) are together for a very long time...in fact most of those elephants are with their mahuts since birth...therefore, they have a very close relationship and thus trust their mahuts a lot and allow them to do many things..
