Understand why children lie
Have you ever been upset, angry, and disappointed with the behavior of your children who tend to lie? Take a deep breath for a moment… Do not express your anger immediately nor ignore this bad habit. You should be able to understand why your child lies and find a strategy to deal with the situation.
There are many reasons why children lie. The first reason is because they fear of punishment, so they choose to lie to hide their actions. This is because the parents are usually too strict and stern in applying the rules at home. The second is to embellish their story so that it becomes more attractive for their parents and others. Children under 3 years until primary school age still like to put their imagination in telling of an event. Eventually the story seems to be full of lies. The third reason is to avoid something. For example, when you ask, “Have you done your homework, sweetie?” your child will simply answer yes to feel secure. And the last reason is to please his parents.
There are many of parents’ actions that unconsciously can be a trigger for a child to lie. As parents, please not to easily judge your child of negative acts and not to directly punish him severely. Also, do not mock your child with the mistakes or bad deeds he did. These things can encourage a child to lie again.
Stop scaring your child when you realize your child is lying and do not threaten him. It will make your child under more pressure and he will cover his lies.
Demanding your little child to do something in details at one time also makes him stressful and leads him to telling lies if he cannot do well.
It is not easy to deal with child’s lies, but it is not that hard to start reducing these bad habits. Get used to talk with your child to correct mistakes and find solutions together rather than blame them. Give him praise for doing good actions. Provide a statement that you are happy if your child is going to be honest and tell you directly what it is to you. Undoubtedly, your child will trust you as a friend and he will tell anything without having to lie.
