Toy Story 3 Operation Buzz Lightyear

For the die-hard Buzz Lightyear fan, now there’s the Toy Story 3 Operation game starring Buzz. It works on the same principle as the classic Operation, and pretty much all the game and movie-based versions ever since. You have to remove the object using the included tweezers, and if you touch the sides, the buzzer goes off. Pretty standard stuff, and the original game has been around since the mid 60′s.

Buzz, however, has his own spin on things. Immediately noticeable is the image used on the actual gameboard. Where most ‘patients’, in all their variety, are laying on their back for the ‘operation’… Buzz is actually in more of an action pose. It looks like he’s being suspended by cables plugged into his armor. The parts have comic sci-fi themed names now. Galactic Acid, Asteroids, Crushed Communicator, Busted Ball Joint, Shattered Shield Generator, Crystallic Confusion, Toasted Turbo Boosters… you get the drift.

Don’t let the box cover fool you. The cover shows Buzz in a more traditional “Operation” pose. Not so. Watch the last half of the video below to see the actual gameboard.

Also gone is the raucous buzzing sound of old. Now there are two sounds, with a high-tech feel. While this is all in fun, and an appropriate ‘Toy Story’ twist to the game of Operation, one concerned parent raised the question of volume. The noises are quite loud, without a volume control.

The board is pretty typical… light plastic, cardboard, and the wiring to make noises when you touch the sides. Measures roughly 16″ x 11″ x 2″, and requires 4 AAA batteries. It does what it’s supposed to do, but I wouldn’t recommend rough handling. In an unusual turn, the ratings are mainly 4 out of 5 stars, with only a small number given to 1-3, and 5-stars. This, of course, leads to an average 4-star rating.

Final thoughts: Toy Story 3 Operation Buzz Lightyear is a pleasant take on an old standby. If your children like Buzz, and enjoy games of manual dexterity such as Operation, this is a win/win choice. If the child tends to get… overexcited with toys, you might want something more durable.
