For the past fifteen years, Dutch artist and inventor, Theo Jansen, has been making kinetic sculptures that look like a cross between something in one of Da Vinci's notebooks and one of the more complex virtual creatures of Karl Sims. Jansen uses genetic algorithms to evolve complex walking creatures that he then builds out of PVC conduit, cable ties, and tape. They are then left to walk along the beach, powered by the wind.

Hamsin is a Middle Eastern term for the dry, hot wind that blows in from the desert. It is usually limited to two seasons, between March and May, and between September and November. Impressive.

The Dynamic Architecture building, which will be constantly in motion changing its shape, will be able to generate electric energy for itself as well as for other buildings. Forty-eight wind turbines fitted between each rotating floors as well as the solar panels positioned on the roof of the building will produce energy from wind and the sunlight, with no risk of pollution. The total energy produced by this inbuilt ‘powerhouse' every year will be worth approximately seven million dollars. Interested?

This futuristically looking building is a design proposal by Michael Jentzen. The main idea of this construction is that the house being a lightweight fabric structure, the wind slowly and randomly rotates each of the six segments around a central open support frame. This continually alters the shape of the pavilion. The occupants could take control and rotate the segments to adjust to changing desires or needs, such as weather conditions, best views, etc. I surely would like to live in such a house, unless you don't get sick, when winding.
