iPhone vs DROID multitouch keyboard showdown (video)

By studio  in  Gadgets

just dashed off this quick video for my Twitter followers to demonstrate that the DROID doesn’t have a multitouch soft keyboard, and pretty much instantly realized that I should probably share it with everyone else, since we’ve been getting a lot of questions about it. Long story short, while Android 2.0 and the DROID’s hardware support multitouch, the device itself doesn’t do multitouch out-of-the-box, and the soft keyboard suffers mightily for it. Why it’s missing is certainly open for debate, but for now just know that no amount of hoping, wishing, or booze is going to make the   read more

Netflix instant streaming demoed on PlayStation 3 (updated with more video!)

By studio  in  Gadgets

Aw, suki suki now! Those Netflix instant streaming discs that started floating out to anxious PS3 owners yesterday are obviously splashing down, with YouTube user (and avid Engadget reader) otimus posting up a stellar walkthrough showing everything in action. We’ve got to admit -- the whole thing looks exceptionally sleek, but given the PS3’s multimedia prowess, we didn’t really expect anything less. He stated that he didn’t notice any stuttering as he sifted through films and mashed play, and that any jitters you see in the video (after the break) can be blamed on the janky TV capture   read more

HTC Hero / Eris mega faceoff on video

By studio  in  Gadgets

Now that we’ve got the DROID Eris in the mix, we’re up to our ears in HTC Hero-derivative devices. We decided to sit the whole crew (GSM, Sprint and Verizon editions) down for a little modeling session, and we’re finding ourselves reticent to pick a favorite. There are really plusses and minuses to each of them, but any way you lean it’s a pretty good handset with some perhaps overly bulky software, a wonderful pricepoint (on Verizon, anyway) and probably a limited time in the sun with upcoming Android 2.0 devices, faster processors and wild new screens rolling on in. Make your own Bluetooth Star Trek Communicator (video)

By studio  in  Gadgets

If you’re looking for a project for the weekend and the Knock Lock seems a little naff, why not try building your own Bluetooth Star Trek communicator? This is definitely not a project for the faint of heart -- expect to custom cut a circuit-board, drill some holes, add a serial port, a Bluetooth module, and a microcontroller. That said, when it’s all said and done you’ll be placing (and answering) calls the same way they do in the 23rd century: by speaking through a small, distorted speaker. If this is your thing, hit up that read link to get the full step-by-step. But before you go that   read more

Video: Android-powered E-Ink display kindles our e-book fantasies

By studio  in  Gadgets

Someday soon, we expect Google’s Android OS (like Microsoft’s ubiquitous WinCE platform) to power pretty much any consumer device available. Until then, we’re left to peer wistfully into the misfit laboratories of the hacking community to get our open-source kicks. The cats at the MOTO Development Group have written a custom driver to create what they claim is the first instance of Android running on an E-Ink display. Unfortunately, there’s plenty of that annoying white / black E-Ink flicker as the display refreshes. While that won’t be eliminated anytime soon, it’s certainly possible   read more

LTE Connected Car redefines the ’mobile’ in mobile broadband (video)

By studio  in  Gadgets

If you think cellphones have become overbearingly complex, look away now. A partnership of tech companies and content providers, known as the ng Connect Program, has revealed a prototype "LTE Connected Car," which, as you might surmise, combines 4G mobile broadband connectivity with a bunch of cloud-sourced facilities, such as video on demand, audio libraries, and multiplayer gaming. It can also serve as a Wi-Fi hotspot, connect directly to home automation or monitoring systems, and probably cook you scrambled eggs if you ask nicely. A Toyota Prius serves as the guinea pig for this new concept,   read more

Video: Theremin-esque digital synth sure to get Brian Wilson up in arms

By studio  in  Gadgets

The theremin is just one of those instruments that nerds can’t stop digging and modding. This newest iteration, the Squaremin, resembles the much-loved instrument in that you don’t touch it to play it -- rather you move your hands about to control the octave and output of notes. The Squaremin was made using an ATmega168 chip, and boasts two infrared sensors to measure proximity -- one to control the note played, the other to control the octave which is played out of the front speaker of the instrument. Check out the video after the break.   read more

Lenovo IdeaPad U150 gets unboxed and critiqued (video)

By studio  in  Gadgets

We spotted the IdeaPad U150 sitting pretty as far back as CEATEC, but now it seems the 11.6-inch beaut is finally finding its way out into the wild, wild wilds. The suave folks over at Netbooked were able to wrap their paws around a retail unit, and aside from just unboxing it on video (which was a nice gesture in its own right), they also ran it through some basic tasks and spit out a few general opinions. Hit the links below if you’d like to follow the journey from undressing to battery life testing, and hop on past the breaks if you’re into this hot new thing called "video."IdeaPad U150   read more
