Lighthouses in Storms

Spectacular video of monster waves beating against the lighthouses. I Hope there were no people inside and if there were the experience must have been terrifying. Here's also a video of ships in storms. In such condition the ships' hulls deform.

Beautiful photos of objects after an ice storm. It's amazing how so much ice can be on twig or a blade of grass. (image courtesy: Rick Macomber (c)2007)

Storms has doubled in century

According to researchers, the number of tropical storms developing annually in the Atlantic Ocean more than doubled over the past century, with the increase taking place in two jumps. The increases coincided with rising sea surface temperature, largely the byproduct of human-induced climate warming. An official at the National Hurricane Center called the research "sloppy science" and said technological improvements in observing storms accounted for the increase.Hurricanes derive their energy from warm ocean water. North Atlantic surface temperature increased about 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit during

tornadoes - discover the fictions and the facts

MYTH: THE LARGER THE TORNADO, THE STRONGERFACT: A thin funnel cloud called a "rope" tornado might not look as devastating as some of the massive, computer-generated tornadoes seen in the movies, but don't be fooled. A tornado's size and shape does not signal its strength. Some rope tornadoes can wreak F5 levels of damage, whereas some extremely wide twisters - called "wedge" tornadoes - only reach F0, the weakest level on the Fujita Scale. MYTH: OPENING WINDOWS WILL MINIMIZE DESTRUCTIONFACT: Although authorities once encouraged people to open windows to equalize air pressure,

Solar storm satellites launched

Five satellites were launched into space from Florida on Saturday aboard an unmanned Delta rocket to investigate electromagnetic storms, the dark side of the phenomenon that causes Earth's dazzling aurorae. The $200 million mission is expected to help scientists develop better forecasting techniques for potentially dangerous solar storms, which can knock out power grids, navigation and other satellites and even force airlines to abandon polar routes due to loss of radio contact. The satellites were carried into orbit aboard a Boeing-built Delta 2 rocket that lifted off at 6:01 p.m.
