’Wink’ USB flash drive: perfect for hockey moms, lipstick-laden pigs

By studio  in  Gadgets

Active Media Products isn’t one to shy away from mildly ludicrous USB flash drive designs, but it may want to snag a lawyer on retainer for this one. Granted, there’s at least a sliver of a chance that Sarah Palin was actually notified that her image would be used to market AMP’s new "Wink" USB flash drive, but chances are she’s being rudely introduced to the sobering truth just as we are. Hailed as the planet’s smallest 16GB thumb drive, this waterproof slab of memory is also available in a few smaller sizes for those unconcerned with gaining political clout. It measures in at just 1.2- x 0.5   read more

Adobe’s Flash Player 10.1 beta GPU acceleration tested, documented

By studio  in  Gadgets

We know you don’t actually care about 99 percent of the contents of the latest Flash Player update. What you really want to know is whether those new 1080p YouTube streams will run smoothly on your machine thanks to the newly implemented graphics card video acceleration. AnandTech has come to our collective aid on that one, with an extensive testing roundup of some of the more popular desktop and mobile GPU solutions. NVIDIA’s ION scored top marks, with "almost perfect" Hulu streaming (see table above), though Anand and crew encountered some issues with ATI’s chips and Intel’s integrated GMA 4500   read more

Adobe Flash Player 10.1 and AIR 2 betas are out, multi-touch and video acceleration are in (video)

By studio  in  Gadgets

Here we go: Adobe just made its Flash 10.1 prerelease packages available for download in fulfillment of its Open Screen promise. The download is available for Windows, Intel-based Mac, and Linux systems with a smartphone version coming later; notably, while no other mobile OS is specifically mentioned, Adobe says that a beta for Palm webOS is slated for "later this year" on its Flash Player 10.1 page. At the moment, however, only the Windows release includes hardware-based video acceleration for H.264 video. And this is beta-ware kids, so there’s more than the usual level of hazard with installing   read more

GPU-accelerated 720p Flash video gets demoed on a netbook (smoothly)

By studio  in  Gadgets

It’s been a long wait since NVIDIA and Adobe announced their plans for GPU-accelerated Flash video back in January of this year, but it looks like the pair now finally have something to show for themselves. While it’s not quite clear how official it is just yet, the folks at NotebookJournal have nonetheless published a video that shows 720p Flash video running smoothly on a netbook (an ION-powered HP Mini 311, to be specific). Unfortunately, it looks like we’ll still have to wait until sometime in the first half of 2010 to see the technology become publicly available (at least if the slides   read more

Apple orders 100 million 8Gb flash chips in ramp up for new device(s)?

By studio  in  Gadgets

Oh Apple, what are you up to? Just like we saw right around this time last year in preparation for Apple’s new iPhone 3G and updated iPod touch, Apple is placing huge orders of NAND chips thereby threatening the supply in demand by other tier-one vendors. This time we’ve got DigiTimes confirming earlier reports that Apple is cornering the market on flash memory -- specifically, the Taiwanese rumor rag is reporting orders of "100 million 8Gb (8 gigabit, not gigabyte) NAND flash chips mostly with Samsung Electronics." That’s twice the size of the order reported last year. The tiny memory chips   read more

Goodbye flash memory, hello phase-change memory?

By studio  in  Gadgets

If IBM, Macronix, and Qimond have their way, the now ubiquitous flash memory could soon be on its way out, replaced by the new-and-improved "phase-change" memory developed by the trio of companies. While complete details on this catchily-named new memory are under wraps until the big unveiling at this week’s International Electronic Devices Meeting in San Francisco, according to the AFP, it’s supposedly 500 to 1,000 times faster than conventional flash memory and uses about half as much power to boot. According to IBM senior manager Spike Narayan, that’ll allow for the non-volatile memory   read more
