| As I shaved this morning I saw the reflection of a man I no longer know. I saw a man that has grown old and weak. I saw the shell of a man once proud and strong. A beaten old man willing to “go along to get along”. | The government made a huge step today in repairing race relations in this country, did they boost up affirmative action, or increase minority benefits? Nope, they apologized for the years of Jim Crow and the insanity of slavery. Of course there is much more to be done, but this is a vital first step. | You can tell George Bush loves the State of the Union speech - center of attention, countless standing ovations and it's the one time of year that even his enemies hold out just a tiny bit of hope that he will "get it" this time. Well like always, the Democrats have found plenty to complain about in Bush's plan for his last year in office. | Robert Gates the US defence secretary has asked congress to approve $189bn more in funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He said the money is needed to, among other things, to "consolidate our bases in Iraq". More money is also needed to improve US facilities in the region and for more training and equipment for the US military and to train and equip Iraqi security forces. The Bush administration had already asked congress to approve $147bn. Gates said it was now seeking another $42bn more.
