| Scientists say hundreds of black holes capable of swallowing entire solar systems could be roaming the galaxy. A threat of 200 rogue black holes has been predicted by supercomputer simulations of what happens when two black holes of different sizes or spin speeds collide. Scientists believe they would merge into one black hole and be kicked into space at 2,500 miles per second and everything in their way would be consumed. Astronomers say it's very difficult to see one coming because black holes are difficult to spot unless it's swallowing a lot of gas, about the only way to detect the approach

| NASA's Messenger probe made its second pass by Venus on Tuesday afternoon, the maneuver will help guide the spacecraft on its circuitous journey to Mercury and give scientists a close-up look at Earth's cloud-shrouded neighbor. The fly-by gave researchers the rare opportunity to pair with a European spacecraft studying Venus."This is the first time that we are able to take observations from two different vantage points."Messenger is the seventh in NASA's Discovery program of lower-cost, scientifically focused space missions. If successful, Messenger, launched in August 2004, would be

| Recent studies show that the Sun is more active now than it has been for the previous 1000 years. Scientists based at the Institute for Astronomy in Zurich used ice cores from Greenland to make a picture of our star's activity in the past. It turned out that over the last century the number of sunspots rose at the same time that the Earth's climate became warmer. This trend is being amplified by gases from fossil fuel burning, they say.

| As Russian ITAR-TASS news agency reported, Russia can repel asteroids "if necessary".What is this "necessary", is that Russia's Institute of Applied Astronomy thinks that about 400 asteroids and over 30 are of potential threat to Earth. Deputy head of the Russian space agency Viktor Remishevsky added that "If necessary, Russia's rocket-manufacturing complex can create the means in space to repulse asteroids threatening Earth".The specialists are particularly worried about an asteroid known as Number 2907, which, as is considered, will strike Earth in year 2880.Long live Russia,

| It seems that my previous post was incorrect. According to the final decision we're back at 8 planets. Pluto has been relegated to dwarf planet status and is no longer something that kids at school will have to remember.
