"Google will destroy enormous tracts of personal information that he holds on internet searches", when did they start to care about user's privacy?

Information like who did what search and when was kept "till it can be used", the new policy say, all identifying information will be deleted after 18-24 months. That's cool, but still don't make me feel that I can trust Google, they can anounce whatever they want. I'm sure they are cooperating with US government, just the government want s it official and Google don't want to be an official informant!
