So much for a home buyer credit in Arkansas

Just last week, we posted an article about HB1986, a bill that would give up to $2,500 to as many as 2,800 first-time home buyers in Arkansas.

That bill was filed on March 7, received a “do pass” recommendation from the House Committee on Insurance & Commerce on March 16 and then failed by a vote of 56-22 on March 17. Indeed, the bill had a legislative life of a mere 10 days.

The bill would have cost the state of Arkansas $7 million and was put forth as a way to recapture some of that housing market activity we saw from April 2008 through April 2010 due to a series of tax credits for home buyers. Oh well.

Yes, it seems like we get at least one oddball piece of legislation whenever the General Assembly is in session and inflicting new laws on us.

A great off-the-wall bill this year is SB901, which is subtitled “an act to protect the public health by restricting the private ownership of nonhuman primates.”

In other words, if that bill passes and becomes law we citizens of the state of Arkansas won’t be able to own monkeys. The bill appears before the Senate on Monday.

Yes, they’re spending our money wisely in Little Rock.
