Setting up your own website
When I first started out as a writer in the year 2000, I had to establish a presence on the web. One way of doing this was to set up my own website.
As I wasn’t well known I decided to start out with as few overheads as possible. I used free website builders and hosts to set up Hentracks.
There are pros and cons to using these services but they did help me for a number of years to build up a presence and reptuation in the career I had chosen.
One of the cons is, of course, the advertising that many of these free service use to earn some revenue. Depending on which service you used, depended on how obtrusive those ads were. The typical ads that were used were pop-ups, pop-unders and banner ads.
When I first started the popular hosting companies were Geocities, Angelfire and Bravenet.
A search in Google for free website hosting now offers many alternatives with variations in webspace and bandwidth. There were also restrictions on what scripts you could use, the content of your site (adult content was not typcially allowed) and how much traffic you were allowed (say 2,000 visitors a month). However, many of these free service offered the ability to upgrade to rid your site and account of any problematic restrictions.
Eventually, I had earned enough from my work that I could afford my own domain and hosting and http://www.hentracks.co.uk was born.
If you are interested in setting up your own website, take a look at the services which are offered. Take into account whether free templates are offered, how much bandwidth and webs space is given, whether you can use a variety of scripts or html, whether you can upload via FTP, how many visitors you are allowed and whether you have the option to upgrade if you need to.
