Just found out this evening that a friend of mine passed away. Janice Thompson lost her long battle with cancer. The announcement was made by her son, who posted the news on Facebook.
8 years ago, she discussed with me about "Black Monday" at WSTM in Syracuse, New York. The new company that bought the TV station fought off attempts to unionize. She described that day in 1988 as a horrible event in time.
"I can could remember people being brought in individually to their manager's office. One by one, workers were brought in. Some came out of the room, crying."
In all, dozens of workers were laid off, even after assurances from the company that there wouldn't be any. Janice would be one of the instrumental people who brought NABET-CWA to WSTM in 1989.
After nearly getting fired by an unscrupulous manager in 2001, Janice became my union steward for the Operations Department. There, she fought off various grievances, unfair labor practices and participated in many contract negotiations. Janice spent over 25 years working at WSTM, until cancer would make it impossible to work. Janice fought tooth and nail to the end, her determination motivated by her children and grandchildren.
She leaves many loved ones and admirers, myself included. My condolences to the family. She no longer suffers anymore.
