Why is writing a form of personal therapy? The answer is simple. “YOU ARE ALLOWED TO RELEASE”
RELEASE
Growing up in a household filled with conflict and domestic violence often left me feeling powerless as a child. “Shhhh!” I would say to my heart. The family battles I witnessed on an ongoing basis should remain a secret. “Who would believe me anyway, I thought.” After all, I was only a child who resembled the perfect upbringing in the neighborhood I grew up in. Back in those days most people assumed domestic violence doesn’t happen in an upper middle class family, at least not the ones who are highly respected and adored within their inner-circles. Of course I was unable to physically protect my loved ones but I could use the power of a pencil from my third grade teacher to use my voice. It was the best weapon I had. Writing became my voice.
Today, I encourage others to use the power of the pen in an effort to release everything that renders them powerless. Most people I encounter on a daily basis are in need of some type of emotional, physical or mental release. Our daily lives are often filled with situations and drama that cause us stress, worry and uneasiness. Writing can be used as a therapeutic method to release the thoughts, emotions and feelings we would otherwise allow to fester in our hearts, minds and souls. The written word allows us to say things we would normally keep secret. The written words jotted down on the pages of our computers and personal journals do not have the power to judge which leaves us a safe place to vent.
As an avid writer I have found my most peaceful moments displayed on the page of a book. Why? No one can tell me how I should feel, think or respond to a particular situation. A pen and the page which tells my most intimate stories have become the main stage in a fictitious theatre I am summoned to perform. Every thought from the depth of my soul has a place to be free and release. If there is something you need to release today, write it…
