Golf, Kanzius best bet on TV - GoErie.com

-----------------------------------------

It will be hard to find a better lineup on television today than the one offered by CBS. The network will air its "60 Minutes" segment about Erie's John Kanzius and his radio-wave therapy to fight cancer right after the conclusion of the Masters. There will be plenty of interest after the program is seen. From what we heard from Kanzius, it took several hours to tape the program. ... We offer our sympathy to the family of Michael D. Crotty, the firefighter who was killed while fighting a fire at Port Erie Plastics at 909 Troupe Road in Harborcreek Township. It was obvious that he was a very popular member of the volunteer fire department in Lawrence Park as well as the Erie Bureau of Fire. ... Pennsylvania State University football coach Joe Paterno's status will be year-to-year without a contract. In other words, it seems to depend on how next season goes. Paterno, 81, has given a great deal to Penn State as a football coach and by what he has given to the university over the years. The 107,000-plus capacity for Beaver Stadium is a result of Paterno's success. ... Aside to admirer: Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, who is coming here Monday in support of presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama, turned 76 on Feb. 22. ... The trout season started Saturday morning. The opening of trout season is always an enjoyable day for young and old. ... Monsignor Tom McSweeney will be in New York City and Washington this week working with MSNBC covering the visit of Pope Benedict XVI. Monsignor McSweeney has been on TV before when there has been something to do with the papacy. He will be cable-casting out of 30 Rockefeller Center (NBC) on MSNBC.

There is an article in the current issue of Sports Illustrated about Bill Campbell's experiences in 18 Masters as an amateur golfer. Campbell, 84, was an outstanding amateur in West Virginia, and one of the golfers he competed with over the years was Frank Harned, of Erie, who turned pro after being an amateur for a time. ... That was a beautiful lightning display early Saturday morning. The thunder was not that loud, but the lightning made up for it. ... We just finished reading a book by John Cornell that details some research about science and other experiments and the preparations for war in Germany after World War I and leading up to World War II. It points out how under Adolf Hitler, Germany broke the Versailles Treaty it signed after World War I and took the time to rebuild its military might. ... That is a real dogfight for the 5th District seat in Congress that is held by Republican John Peterson, of Pleasantville. Peterson, 69, had decided not to seek a seventh two-year term. There are nine Republicans and three Democrats seeking the seat. Peterson announced that he is supporting Centre County GOP Chairman Glenn W. Thompson in the race to fill his seat. ... We understand there is a bald eagle expecting on Presque Isle State Park. Officials are being careful because the bald eagle is a rare bird and are hoping another will hatch. ... There was a good article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette about college grants that make it much more reasonable to attend schools like Princeton and Harvard universities. In the case of Harvard, Eva Gillis-Buck will be able to go there free rather than pay the $47,215 it costs for tuition, along with room and board, if the family's income is under $60,000. Buck can attend Harvard for about $15,000 a year, according to the article. At Princeton, the cost will only be about $6,000. It shows how much of a discount is available.

A problem with our presses early Saturday morning caused the paper to be around five hours late. Ironically, it happened on the 120th anniversary of the founding of the paper, April 12, 1888. The paper did get delivered about 11 a.m. at the latest. We appreciate how understanding the subscribers were about the problem. ... The trial for former Allegheny County County Coroner Cyril Wecht resulted in a hung jury. He was accused of using his public office for private use. There have been accusations he was charged because he is a Democrat and the U.S. attorney is a Republican. Actually, one of Wecht's lawyers was former Republican Gov. Dick Thornburgh. A retrial is expected.
