A lone gunman is sought following the armed robbery of the Prosperity Bank branch here at 10:58 a.m. Wednesday. “We think he was acting alone, but we’re not certain,” said Yorktown Police Chief Paul Campos, noting that neither direction of travel nor mode of transportation was known.

Campos said the two workers in the bank, both women, were unharmed. The chief said according to the two employees the man was carrying an automatic pistol, demanded all the money, and jumped over the counter.

At one point the man demanded the two women lay on the floor, then had one get up and let him out the back door of the bank at 150 E. Main St. He got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

“We’ve questioned people in the area,” Campos said. “There is a gas station across the street, a barber shop, liquor store. No one saw anyone running away, so he might have had someone waiting for him with a car.”

The man is described as 6-feet tall, wearing a dark-colored baseball cap, blue shirt, blue pants, and white ski mask.

“All they could see were his eyes,” Campos said. “At first they said they thought he was Caucasian, but later they weren’t sure. They did exactly what they are trained to do. I commend them.”

“We’re proud of them,” said Dan Rollins, Prosperity Bank president. “Everyone did what they were trained to do. Unfortunately this is a part of our business these days.”

A Corpus Christi Prosperity Bank branch was robbed exactly a week ago, on Wednesday, Jan. 16. An arrest was made in that case.

The DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office and the Cuero Police Department also responded to the Yorktown robbery and FBI agents from Victoria and the bank’s investigator are continuing the investigation.

Campos said the town’s three other banks -Trust Texas Bank, Citizens Bank and First National Bank-Beeville were immediately contacted and asked to be on alert. Prosperity Bank remained closed the remainder of the day, but will reopen today.
