ARTICLE: Nokia N900 drops to $480 on Amazon

By ryan  in  Gadgets

I’ll admit - I was considering the purchase of a Nokia N900 to carry in the ol’ arsenal of wireless devices, until I saw the price. Even as a certified wireless junkie, $649 is a bit too much for me (hey, I need to pay the rent first). I haven’t been this excited about a Nokia device in quite some time, thanks to Maemo 5. The name of the game seems to be social networking, and from my limited time with the N900 at CTIA, it seems like Nokia gets it. Thanks to Amazon, the N900’s price has dropped to $479.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate. For a 3.5-inch touchscreen display   read more

Arrests made in massive, $390/hour Video Relay Service scam

By ryan  in  Science & Technology

Dealing with some technology is challenging enough for the hearing-impaired without scammers taking advantage of federal dollars meant to help them. That’s exactly what has happened with the Federal Communications Commission’s Video Relay Service (VRS), however, and 26 people were arrested Thursday for scheming to steal “tens of millions of dollars” from the program. VRS was first launched in Texas in the mid-90s as a way for the deaf to communicate via telephone. A hard-of-hearing or speech-impaired person could use a video phone to dial into a VRS service   read more

Nokia Confirms, Symbian and Maemo are Here to Stay

By ryan  in  Gadgets

The guys at Maemo created a buzz in the mobile community when, at an official Maemo event in London, they said that, going ahead, Nokia will focus on Maemo for their high-end N Series phones. This gave an impression that, Nokia is letting Symbian go and adoption Maemo as platform for its N Series devices. However, Nokia has confirmed that, Symbian is one of their preferred OSs along with Maemo. Symbian has always been a preferred OS when it comes to its N Series smart phones and the popularity of these phones is dependent on the wide adoption of Symbian as a OS and the amount of apps that are available   read more

By ryan  in  Computers & Software

College isn’t cheap these days, even if you’re attending public university. In that case, pretty much any discount offered to students is welcome. Microsoft’s Mac Business Unit has just announced that it’s offering a special discount on the full Office 2008 Business Edition for US college students, offering them a 70 percent discount off the usual retail price. Even if you’re not a college student, though, the Mac BU is offering a range of “holiday” discounts on Office as well. Office 2008 for Mac comes in two different editions. The Home   read more

Samsung SGH i450 Beat DARK BLUE

By myphoneway  in  Gadgets

Out of the box, Samsung phones often struggle to impress. Maybe it's the egg-carton packaging that Samsung uses, or perhaps it's the gun-metal grey plastic bodies of recent Samsung phones, but the G600 and i450 have both made poor first impressions, defying their much hyped features. Sliding the i450 open to reveal its recessed keypad did little to raise our opinion; a flat plastic layer with numbers defined by tiny raised strips. It was only when we slid the body in the opposite direction that we encountered the first of many pleasant surprises.   read more
