Geo's Reef = Great Customer Service

By AquaNerd  in  Pets & Animals

While gathering equipment for my new tank build, I ran across a GEO 624 calcium reactor on ReefCentral. I immediately jumped on it and the buyer quickly shipped it to me. The package arrived within a few days and it was packed very well, but the bubble counter had broken off of the PVC manifold. I thought about repairing it, but before I got my hands dirty I decided to contact GEO to inquire about purchasing a replacement. George contacted me back in less than 24-hours and asked for a picture of the damage to see if it was even worth fixing. After sending him the pictures, he contacted me back   read more

Remembering Oscar

By ryan  in  Pets & Animals

It doesnt seem fair. As soon as I posted a story about Teddy, a former foster dog, I heard from my friend Ilona, who adopted Oscar from me years ago. It was one of the saddest phone calls Ive received. She was inconsolable. She came home from babysitting her granddaughter to find Oscar had died with no warning. The only sign was that he seemed tired and wouldnt eat that morning. Even though Oscar was adopted through Southern California Lab Rescue, I confess he wasnt even close to a Lab, but when I was at the Escondido Humane Society, picking up a Lab, here was this gorgeous white dog with   read more

Remembering the Good Guys

By ryan  in  Pets & Animals

One of the best parts of our job is meeting people who swim against the current to help nearly forgotten animals in their corners. In so many cases, those people are shelter workers who work to help those ostracized pit bulls without the cushion of a supportive community. (We are so spoiled in the SF bay area!) BR’s sister organization - Partners in Shelter Services – has identified three diehards who went above and beyond to make positive change during tough times in 2009. Because it was the year of the bust dog, It just so happens that all worked to help the victims of cruelty   read more

New Ocean Developing in Ethiopia

By AquaNerd  in  Pets & Animals

Live Science is reporting that a new ocean may soon appear in Ethiopia. In 2005, a giant crack began to develop in the African country of Ethiopia, and has sense grown to be over 35 miles long and 20 feet wide in some spots. This view has been disputed by many, but has confirmed by a new study involving an international team of scientists. Their report in the journal Geophysical Research Letters finds the processes creating the Ethiopian rift are nearly identical to what occurs at the bottom of oceans. Additionally, similar seismic activity is causing the Red Sea to grow.According to researchers,   read more

I just love this photo

By ryan  in  Pets & Animals

Fun time! Haley the Bearded Collie, Rex the Lab and Porter the Lab cavort in the yard. These are the two biggest labs I’ve ever seen, except maybe Nate, who also spends a lot of time here. They are each about 100 pounds and never sit still. As for Haley, well they don’t call them Bouncing Beardies for nothing. She loves all the action, but whoa, what a grooming project! 2009 Terry Albert. All rights reserved.   read more
