1000 Islands

1000 Islands are located between Kingston and Brockville. In reality there are more then 1800 islands there. In the Beginning of the XVIII (18) century they were divided into 8 groups according to size. It's an amazing place. The scenery is fantastic. Can you imagine seeing massive tankers and cargo ships go right by your house :)

My high school friends, Dale Fikes & Bobby Gibbs, led the restoration teams that transformed Boldt Castle on Hart Island (renamed Heart Island) from an unfinished, vandalized, shameful mess into the beautiful castle that it is today. Bobby just died a few weeks ago from a brain tumor. Peter Curtis' company built many of the furniture pieces that were used in it. They dedicated their lives to it.

Rivers are made of what? Water. Although sea levels rising due to global warming will not affect these homes global warming will increase rainfall and melting ice/snow causing rises in this river's level and speed.

global warming will effect the great lakes and the st. lawrence, they will lose water - warmer temps = less snow pack = less runoff = drop in lake levels = drop in st. lawrence. And the governments involved may build bigger dams to slow this process for two reasons - one because the southwest USA wants to pipe water from superior, two the river levels effect ship traffic and so commercial productivity.

I've been to most of the places in those pictures (My Grandma has a cottage near the lighthouse near the beginning), and the pictures in fact come out of the books of Ian Coristine, one of which is found here: http://www.amazon.com/1000-Islands-Photography-Ian-Coristine/dp/0973041900/ref=sr_1_1/104-7249813-1808750?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1191203640&sr=8-1

We used to go here several times every summer growing up. We had a small yacht up there and lived about 2 hours south. It sure is beautiful. I recognized many of the places, particularly Jorstadt Castle on Dark Island and Boldt Castle on Heart Island. Sadly, I have not been there for years, making me feel as if I took it all for granted as a child growing up around there.

There's great fishing and the little resort town of Alexandria Bay is fun. The winters up there are punishing. I believe, for the most part, that most of those places are summer houses for the wealthy

Nonsense. There are many, many homes on the river which are on the mainland, i.e., not on islands, but on the river nonetheless, and you could easily afford one of them for $200-$300 thousand. You don't have to be an American to one one, either.

Yes, I realize there are houses on the mainland. Yes, I realize that with it's proximity to Canada, there are also Canadian Islands. I also realize that in the winter, many of these houses on the islands are shut down because the water will freeze in the pipes and the septic tank. Many of the smaller islands rely on generators to provide them with power and these houses serve primarily as summer houses, sometimes referred to as the "camp" by their owners. Hence, many of the island houses are summer houses and very expensive. Many of the people migrate to mainland over in Canton or Watertown.

Is there anything else you would like to add in your meticulous dissection of my comments, Captain Obvious?

I'll tell you what - drive about 40 minutes to Lake Ontario, along the shore just south of Sackets Harbor, to Knobby Knoll, Campbells Point, Boltons Beach or anywhere in between and go in the water there in the Summer. It's very shallow and is almost warm enough to be bath water.

Yes those are the "Thousand Island" region between the US and Canada on the St Lawrence river. The river connects Lake Ontario with the Atlantic Ocean. I've been there and toured Boldt Castle, which can be seen in several pics. Pictures 3 and 4 show Boldt Castle. Yes they can run power lines to the islands, but the residents have to pay for it to be run themselves. Water is usually well water and sewage is usually a septic tank. A ship does come by and drain them regularly. There are lots of amazing facts about the region. The smallest island is only a couple square feet and supports one small tree and some grasses. If something were to happen to the tree, it would no longer count towards being an island. There is an island that has a house on one island and and "the shortest international bridge" to the island right next to it, about 20 feet. This is not true, however, both islands are on the Canada side of the border. It's a beautiful region and I will love to visit it many more times. Thanks for posting the pics, it's beautiful to see it from the air

Well, no. There are some very big islands in the area to which you can drive, most notably Wellesley Island. George Boldt, who started the castle on Hart Island, had a farm there which supplied his NY City restaurants, and vacationed there after his wife died and he ordered the construction of the castle to be stopped. There are communities on these islands, including Thousand Island Park, where Abbie Hoffman lived while the authorities were looking for him. There's a 36-hole golf course on the island.

Amazing photos...I live along the St. Lawrence myself, in Cornwall, Ontario. I like to take the drive along the 1000 Islands parkway just west of Brockville. It's a beautiful drive, especially in the fall. I stayed in a cottage near Boldt castle, just outside of Gananoque, you could see the castle from the dock. It was amazing. Thanks for posting the pics, it's nice to see the waterway from the air

I recognize many of the shots here, A few of the shots looked like Bolt Castle, and possible Singer Castle. Both are open to tourists now and are being completely restored. Looked like a few shots of the harbor at Alexandria Bay and possible Sackets Harbor as well. I live up here, it is a beautiful place in the summer months, and early fall. I don't recommend it in the winter though (it gets really cold up here

These pictures are totall awesome. Here I am, a very proud Canadian, travelling to different parts of the US to "see" things, when we have such beautiful scenery right here, not at my door step since I live in Atlantic Canada...Cape Breton Island (which is also consider a "jewel") but here in our wonderful country of Canada.
Thanks so much for sharing these with us. You have educated me about my own country and at the same time made me most proud to know such beauty is here in our midst

Not really, there is quite an interesting demographic in the region.
I live in the area and I wouldn't say that I am too well off. The islands are great, with most of the Canadian sides being entirely cottage areas. Furthermore, there are a number of islands which are provincial parks where you can camp very cheap. It's a fantastic place to spend summer days.

I was on a trip with my Mother and Grand-mother a month after my Grand-father died of lung, liver limphnode and bone cancer (excuse the spelling, medical terms are not my thing). Summer of 2006 was hard but this trip made it so much better. Just the three girls and our camera! One of the most memorable stops was in Gananoque to take the 1000 Islands tour! Heart Island or as is was known before, Hart Island and the story behind it touched mine and my Grand-mother's "hearts". After loosing the love of her life she understood the sadness he felt when he lost his wife! Although still under repairs I enjoyed so, and I can not wait to go back the day it is done

Well You've obviously never seen Houston. The sceanery is breathing. We have many islands too- most in the middle of golf courses. Then theres scenic Bradys' Island. It's a lovely place formed by an oxbow in Buffalo Bayou. It's a real island filled with wildlife and shrubbery- the wildlife being rats, birds, opossums and raccoons. Well many illegal aliens too working at the picturesque pipe yards. All in all well worth a visit- bring your binoculars and mosquito repellant. Houston is noted in some circles for it's romantic isles and after a photo taking vacation I think you will note it too
