Blogging Platforms Comparison: Blogger against WordPress

I am still a newbie blogger. When I started, somehow I naturally get to the Blogger. However, moving forward, I am trying to define is the Blogger platform right for my purposes. There is a choice, and all the alternative solutions should be investigated. Usually, you can find anything on the Internet, but it appears to be challenging to locate a comparison tables, highlighting vital features of different blogging platforms. The best comparison I found on the Online Journalism Review page. The table updated for the last time on May 18, 2006. For the blogging platforms development, almost two years are ages. So, what is new there? In the PC World top blogging platforms review (January 22, 2007), the only two free platforms presented are Blogger and Wordpress with slight Blogger priority. Based on that post, and in order to limit the spec of this review, I will focus on these platforms comparison.

Let’s bring the segment of the comparison table from Online Journalism Review for the feature-to-feature evaluation:

As you see, there are indeed serious differences between platforms that might influence on your informative decision on using one or another. Bear in mind that I am referring to the developer hosted wordpress.com, not the self hosted wordpress.org.

So, let’s review several factors on the platforms differences:

  1. Blog Import: In Blogger - not available; in WoordPress - you can import from several other platformd, including from Blogger.
  2. Image Storage: In Blogger - 300 MB; in WordPress - 3 GB.
  3. Static Pages: In Blogger - not available; in WordPress - static pages can be listed in separate menus.
  4. Post by Email: In Blogger - accepted; in WordPress - not.
  5. Categories: In Blogger - not available; in WordPress - arranged with no problem.
  6. File Uploading: In Blogger - not available; in WordPress - files can be uploaded.
  7. Indexing Time: Here Blogger produces far better results, as due to the tight connections with Google, it can appear in the Search Engines very fast.
  8. Blog Monetization: WordPress has serious restrictions on the publishing ads, so if you plan to use AdSense, your preferences will probably lean more to the Blogger.

Based on all information available, I think Blogger is better for beginners, while WordPress is better for more experienced bloggers.

But, for this program,

For a beginner blogger, trying to make some money with AdSense, Blogger is the best. Eventually, the platform limitations might become a burden. I still did not get to the point where I really need to go for alternatives, and all my 5 blogs are hosted by Blogger.

I am also a newbie in blogs world. Blogger is my first choice because of simplicity and no software needed for posting your writings. I want to try Wordpress also but it seems that you need to install a program into your PC in order that you can put a post at their site. Please correct me if I am wrong about it...

I did not try WordPress yet. However, before choosing Blogger for my blogs, I did research. So far, the Blogger limitations do not force me to look for the alternative solution. Mostly, because of Google AdSense, that is much easier to use on Blogger. There are many blogger communities that use WordPress, but you do not need to download software on your PC (I would frankly prefer to do so). BTW, for posting to Blogger I also use the software Post2Blog.
"Big Bloggers" note that if you are going to drive to the top of the hill, at some point you have to get your own top domain, and you should abandon Blogger, switching to the more professional platform. I did not get to the point yet, where these limitations hurt my income and popularity. May be, one day...

I hope your wish will be fulfilled... For me it's still a long way to go. I am still new to blog and looking around exploring. OK, I get your suggestion. Software to help you post the writing to blogs is good idea but I have to find a good one. I will check and try Post2Blog as you mention. Thanks Mike..

Post2Blog is not the best one. But, it is the one that worked best for me. My listing of the blog publishing freeware. May be, you find a better solution:

I started blogging using Blogger in 2005 or 2006. At that time it was considered user friendly to me and it was improved in the layout menu where we can add page element and put our adsense code there. But the default themes are limited. Fortunately, now we can search for Blogger themes in internet.

Why should install a software in PC for posting a blog? I've never done it.

Nowadays, I use WordPress. I had to adjust myself to the menu and everything at the beginning. For me now, WP is better. Maybe in previous time, it's difficult to use, but with the latest version and with many plugins available, we don't have to understand scripts to modify our theme.
My internet community recommend WP as it's SEO friendly.

Thank you for your interesting observation. You definitely have much more experience through all the years of blogging. How about using Google Adsense at WP blogs? Any problems?

At first I found some problems, because I must paste the AdSense code to WP template and often I got misplaced it :)
Now there's a plugin where you can put the codes anywhere you want in the blog.

I haven't got a blog yet at WP but I have one at google-owned blogger ie: http://rdy888.blogspot.com, it's easier for newbie :-) all sites related to google just use one id. The only problem is low traffic and my spare time to write posts. And of course, ideas to share with...

For a free WP, go to www.wordpress.com, but u won't be able to put adsense code there
Google really has complete features.

Thanks for note. That what I thought. Or you have to use paid platform WP, or you should forget about AdSense income.

Sorry madam :-), I am still new to WP and I don't know the term of "SEO". According to your elaboration, to write blogs at WP, we do not need to install softwares. Is that correct? And one thing I have to consider, more blog sites more times to manage :-) But my friend at YST ie: "Nesher" suggest me to use software to manage your blogs such as Windows Live Writer. He is a very good consultant indeed. I will test all the software he suggest if I have more spare time. Thanks for sharing...
