The Guinness Book of World Records recently named the 3-year-old Yorkshire Terrier, the smallest working dog in the world.

Lucy who was discovered in New Jersey weighs just two and a half pounds, and is less than 6 inches long.

Lucy stole the title away from a 6-pound search and rescue dog in Japan.

Lucy works as a therapy dog, through the Leases of Love program, based in Cherry Hill, N.J.

The tiny terrier makes her rounds each week, visiting hospitals, nursing homes, and rehabilitation centers. She also works with children with disabilities, and troubled youth.

“Because she is so tiny, people are drawn to her — she stops traffic,” said Sally Leone Montufar, Lucy’s owner.

Lucy has been brightening up the days of those in need for about one year, but that almost didn’t happen.

Montufar met Lucy when the Yorkie’s previous owner was taking her to the animal shelter in a Juicy Couture dog carrier. “The designer tote bag was very beautiful,” she says, “and out came this peanut.”

Montufar decided to give Lucy a home.

“She has a beautiful personality,” said Montafur.

She hopes spreading the word about Lucy and her work, might encourage other people to rescue dogs in need of a home. “You never know the potential until you try.”
