Maxell 191046 Full Size Keyboard with Large Print Letters (yellow)
I nearly didn’t include this keyboard. It’s not illuminated. No backlighting. But, it does attempt a similar function. Instead of using lights to make this keyboard visible, Maxell made the keys yellow, and used very large size print for the letters on each key. While they WON’T be visible in a dark room, they are extremely visible in low light.
Maxell designed the 191046 for people with visual impairment. Not a miracle-worker by any means, but for those of us who don’t see as well as we used to, it really makes the letters pop visually.
The board itself is pretty basic. For about $21.00, you get a full-sized keyboard and 104 keys, with a wired USB connector. There are hot keys for Home, E-mail, Search, Refresh, Back, Forward, My Favorite, Stop, My Computer, and Sleep. Plus dedicated media control keys.
For a low-budget keyboard, the Maxell 191046 is a decent job. For the visually impaired, it’s well worth considering. Customer satisfaction is an overall 4 out of 5 stars, with a some complaints about keys sticking. Designed to be compatible with Windows 98 right up to Windows 7. There was one report of complete incompatibility. Since that was from the end of 2010, when the keyboard was first released, it was most likely a new-product bug. That’s why I like to get a product AFTER it’s been out a while and had the bugs shaken out… :^)
Final thoughts: Personally, I prefer illuminated keyboards. But, if you want a plain, low-cost keyboard with super-easy-to-read keys, this might be exactly what you’re looking for.
