    • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balaeniceps_rex It's the so-called Shoebill, a huge bird from Africa

    • First Pic: NOW I know why it's called "Turtle Wax
      Avatar_smallover 4 years agoby Anonymous
    • I was wondering about that one. They don't do that anymore. The wax prolly made them look nicer, but the shell is attached to the turtle so the wax could be absorbed into the bloodstream. A mineral oil would do the same thing but would be not as dangerous to the animal.

    • Great Pics.. I remember washing and feeding the elephants in Dublin Zoo back in the 70's when I was a kid. I used to bring my little sister with me during the school holidays and we did it with long brushes and fed the penguins too. People think Im lying when I tell them I did it, but like the above pics, you could really get up close and personal in those days before personal insurance and the modern "claim culture" took hold. Ah.... The good old days ! LOL Valerie - Dublin- Ireland

    • I have just recovered a load of old pics from my parents old house and these are very similar - they really are great, and though some of them appear to have been contrived they are nontheless great icons of a time gone by. Where do you see Rhinos in a pen like that

    • at my place.....

    • The panda goalie is the coolest, everything looks real stylish in black and white

    • Wow. What's most amazing is how trumendousely far zoos have come in recent years. I would hate to be an animal in one of those pens back then. Terrible conditions, but what great archives! The shoebill is not extinct, but is almost prehistoric. There is a breeding pair at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo. I have to disagree, they don't seem . . . "right" . . . they seem sad. That humans, the "compassionate, intelligent species" would alow such domination over our once-wild cousins. At least we have made progress. And fyi, alot is not a word: it's A lot

    • Thanks for pointing that out. By the way, 'trumendousely' isn't a word either. It's 'tremendously'.

    • The bird in #11 is a Dodo bird. No, really
      Avatar_smallover 4 years agoby nice
    • your a dodo bird....

    • nice photos
      Avatar_smallover 4 years agoby weaselmannc7
    • In case anyone cares, the group of people looking at the penguins passing, include the then Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret. (The two girls without hats!) I would estimate about 1936-7

    • Excellent pictures. It gives you a lot to think about in regards to coexisistance
      Avatar_smallabout 4 years agoby dcbraganza
    • are all fake
      Avatar_smallabout 4 years agoby dario
    • Fake? what ever gave you this idea?
      Kitty.smallabout 4 years agoby kitty
    • always some douchebag has to say they're fake. It's par for the course with posting comments on the internet. And #11 is not a Dodo bird, it is the shoebill. Look it up on wikipedia.
      Avatar_smallabout 4 years agoby Anonymous
    • You do understand that Wikipedia is open for anyone to edit and is not all fact. I do believe this is a shoebill and not a dodo, but not because Wikipedia says so.
      Avatar_smallover 1 year agoby Guest
    • yeah, most of them are photoshopped. I can tell by the pixels. lol
      Avatar_smallabout 4 years agoby max
    • These are very interesting! Love the sense of old photography, so archaic yet so modern
Avatar_smallabout 4 years agoby sarah france
    • of course they are fakes, you can tell because they are black and white
Avatar_smallabout 4 years agoby binky dog
    • Even though these are old they have a timeless appeal - shows they are great. Thanks for posting
      Avatar_smallabout 4 years agoby Anonymous
    • In the first picture, I'd have thought they would use "Turtle Wax
      Avatar_smallabout 4 years agoby RJWolin
    • its a bad enviremont for the animals
      Avatar_smallabout 4 years agoby Anonymous
    • I am sorry to dissapoiny u ppl but some of these picture are 100% fakes. It they were taken at that time, some pics wouldnt look like that. For instance the jumping thingy above the guardian is far too sharpley taken, imposible fot the techology of that period.Next is that fax on turtles back,it is too focused as it was implemented from a higher res pic.Samo goes for that record player that stands out near a lions cage. The creator choosed B+W to make pics look more realistic.BTW nooone that likes animals climb their backs to wash them,it was done with large scalings. The pic with the panda is also imposible cuz kids were never alowed to enter cages, neither were those litle animals let out side of it.Imagine what would happen to a child playing with a lion cub next to its mother....fake XD
      Avatar_smallalmost 5 years agoby Kserijaro
    • you mean the gazelle? I don't know much about the capabilities of the technology of that period so I can't really argue with you about it. But I can tell you that the elephant wouldn't mind a man standing on his back and brushing him. Just look at the Indian elephant and their "companions".
      Misskatie.smallalmost 4 years agoby MissKatie
    • Some douche has always got to come around and be an expert on everything. So glad you were there every single day at the London zoo so you could report these very important "facts." What would we do without your constant vigilance? You pompous assertion that none of these events could have ever happened makes me pretty sure your assertion about the photography techniques is 100% grade-a bullshit too. Go read a book please, and stop spewing your ignorance everywhere and trying to sound like a genius, it's not working.
      Avatar_smallover 1 year agoby Dalektyme
    • yea but the Indian elephants and their mahuts(companions) are together for a very long time...in fact most of those elephants are with their mahuts since birth...therefore, they have a very close relationship and thus trust their mahuts a lot and allow them to do many things..
      Avatar_smallalmost 4 years agoby Anonymous
    • that's true. But who knows how long this elephants knows her(think it's a she) caretaker and besides if had an itch on the back, wouldn't you allow someone to scratch it :)
      Misskatie.smallalmost 4 years agoby MissKatie
    • Yes,u would. But even tho some of pics are fake, some are genuine. But anyway they all look great.Even for the people that dony like animals like me. eg. I like them (pics and animals).
      Avatar_smallalmost 4 years agoby KSerijaro
    • see the young queen elizabeth and princes margaret in the penguin one they are standing by the wall

    • I think my favorite is where they're playing music to the wolves. Someone testing out the old theory that music soothes the savage beast? heehee

    • I wonder if some of those tortises are still alive.
      Avatar_smallabout 3 years agoby saxquiz
    • I would bet that they are. If the waxing didn't kill them in some way.
      Avatar_smallover 1 year agoby Guest
    • lol "cool photos, although the are black ans white and very dark, you feel like the people care about the animals there" wow....you know those photos are staged right? it wasn't great being a zoo animal back then. even now in some places
      Avatar_smallabout 3 years agoby molly
    • it's not great being a zoo animal period
      Misskatie.smallabout 3 years agoby MissKatie
    • ciaooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!a tuttiiiii!!!non capisco le vostre lingue ma bye bye
      Avatar_smallabout 3 years agoby sofia
    • That is definitely not a Dodo, which has been extinct since the 17th century. It is a Shoebill aka. Whalehead. Pictures, genuine or not, still very enjoyable.
