Importance of buying your own domain name

When deciding to start blogging, lot of people opts for some of the free blogging platforms like Blogger or Wordpress.com. Main reason for this is that nobody is sure that blogging can earn anything so why invest money in such questionable endeavor. I was guilty of using the same logic too.

Now, while you really do not need to invest in paid hosting, domain name is something that you definitely want to buy. There are more than enough reasons for this and it is quite unfortunate that lot of bloggers do not yet realize this.

Your domain name is just like your underwear, it goes everywhere with you and you will not let anybody else use it. In addition, you will probably want your underwear to fit you as well.

When you own your own domain name, you do not depend on your host, and you even do not depend on the hosting platform. It’s easy to start your blog for free on Blogger and once you reach the earnings you wish for, you just pay for hosting somewhere, install standalone Wordpress and import your Blogger blog. Change your DNS settings and in a matter of hours, your blog is up and running on a server half the world away from Blogger.

When you have your own domain name, this migration will not have almost any impact. Your visitors will still be able to find you by typing your old and familiar web address. All the back-links you managed to get for your blog, will still point in the right direction and your site’s rankings will be the same.

On the other hand, if you used a sub domain for your blog, not only would your address look much uglier (for example compare www.me.com to www.me.wordpress.com), it will also be much harder to remember. Not to mention that if you really start becoming popular, somebody might land in on your success, register a domain with the name of your blog and immediately start taking over your visitors.

So, just spend that $10-$11 for a unique domain name and do it right from the very beggining. In the end, if you are not willing to spend money on your hobby or business, why are you doing it at all?
