How I was able to quickly and easily prep for the PMP Exam

For many years I have been working in the project management field without having attempted the PMP Exam. I have run hundreds of ERP and CRM projects and been involved in all areas of Planning, Initiating, Executing, Monitoring and Control, and Closing. I have seen many projects go flawlessly, and I have seen a few crash and burn. All-the-while, I have been running these projects without any sort of substantiation of my credential as a Project Manager. What I really need is my PMP (Project Management Professional) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI) so that I can properly reflect my skills and abilities.

A few years ago, I took a correspondence course that was meant to be a preparatory course for the PMP exam. I ran through the workbook and studied the related guides. I read parts of the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) book. I would say that it was beneficial and I learned from it. But it didn’t really solve the issue of passing the PMP Exam.

So for the past few years, I have been looking for a solution to help me prepare for the PMP Exam. Nothing really seemed to stand out as a good prep course or training for the PMP Exam.

PMP Exam Test Prep Kit Review

There was a lot of material presented. Essentially it is broken into three parts: “Learn it! Practice It! Track it!”, Study Material, and “Track your Progress.” My first impression is “wow, there is a lot here!” Since I figured that you start at the top, I took the evaluation exam. Of course, I failed it, despite knowing a lot of the answers, but it shows that I am not prepared, just because I know the material. For an the PMP exam, you need to really know your details.

So I dug deeper into the uCertify PMP Exam Prep Course. I found the “Study Helper” section that takes you through a deeper level of study. This section contains various mini-courses that are laser focused on the content you need to know. Essentially it is a PowerPoint slide show of each of the sections of the PMI study material that gives you the essential knowledge you need to know. This is where I found the meat of the PMP Exam prep course. It contained the essential cost formulas, the definitions, and all of the other detail that I missed on the initial exam.

The downside of the Study Helper course is that that you need to print each page one by one. It would be nice if you could print all in one print run.

The little detail I liked was at the bottom of the index page of the PMP Exam prep kit was a little light bulb with test taking suggestions. Most were common sense, but it was good to see. I can imagine running through these the day before the actual exam.
