- NEC e373, just released on Italian carrier TIM, treads some moderately uncharted territory as a truly low-end UMTS clamshell, lacking an external display and expansion slot. To boot, the useless-for-anything-but-video-calling VGA camera and 32MB of internal memory make the phone all but useless as a multimedia device..
- The utter ubiquity of cams in handsets these days illustrates that sensors tend to travel in packs: first it was VGA, then 1.3 megapixels, then 2, 3.2, and 5. So what's the deal with 4? We were fully prepared to overlook it entirely, call it a dead issue, and be satisfied with the 3.2 and 5 megapixel phones on the market, but Russia's Voxtel bucked the trend recently with its W740 - and now this here IP1000 from CECT is hopping on the bandwagon. The Chinese device adds a QVGA touch screen, decent media support, and a fabulous flower pattern for a pretty tight package.
- What's the point in putting together a keypad that offers no tactile feedback whatsoever if it ain't a touchscreen? Lucky customers on KDDI's Japanese au network appear poised to find out, thanks to the rumored W51PT from Pantech. The machine-translated details leave us with more questions than answers, but we guess the clamshell offers a 2.4-inch QVGA display, 2.1 megapixel cam, microSD expansion, a one-seg tuner, and support for LISMO (wireless music downloads) in a 132 gram, 11.9 millimeter thick package.
- New crypto phone on the scene dubbed the vectroTEL X8 apparently manufactured by SAGEM. It goes tri-band GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 and features a 240 x 320 pixel, 256k color display, Bluetooth, and 1.3 megapixel camera no self-respecting spy should be without. Clearly, the most important feature, however, is end-to-end call encryption via 1024-bit Diffie Hellman Key exchange and 128-bit AES encryption. Slap in a miniSD card / crypto module (with PIN activation) and you too can make "tamper proof" calls to uh, all the other nefarious peeps with vectroTEL handsets. So get to planning your conspiracy now..))
