Global Food Supply Could Impact Your World Too
In the U.S. we are spoiled, take for granted and are used to a very dependable food production and delivery system, as compared to the global food situation, we as Americans have been truly blessed, and along with many other developed nations, the global food supply system is not much of a concern.
It is very much a subject that unfortunately is far removed from most of us, yet it is very real in many parts of the world that have not been able to feed themselves adequately for a multitude of reasons.
Undeveloped nations if not blessed with prime farmland, find themselves at a disadvantage to begin with and to compound things for them we see that they are limited in access to better seeds, fertilizer, irrigation, poor storage, reliable transportation, and inefficient markets. All this contributes to a very inconsistent local and global food supply, with the most needy affected most.
A lot of places are barely able to feed themselves, much less their own country or region, and are very much dependent on imports from richer nations. The efforts of many individuals and aid groups over the years has helped many with farming and water techniques to establish a local sustainable food production economy.
Other than weather, it seems that a lot of peoples lack of food in developing countries is directly related to political and economic forces that directly affects the common person, a lot of these factors are unfortunately out of their control.
In order to feed a growing population the production of food needs to double, I doubt at this point that this is being met although the potential is there for more people to sustain themselves.
As for as political or government intrusion is concerned, the level of practical help or outright gifts of aid is very much at the mercy of the the present leadership in power, typically an authoritarian dictator has gleaned the best of aid packages and left the leftovers for the common general populace, which does nothing to help individuals who need it the most.
Throw this altogether with food shortages (sometimes perceived) which has a direct effect of rising prices, the situation globally is bleak to say the least. Commodities such as sugar, grains, oils are at all time highs. Using feed and food grains such as corn for ethanol production puts an additional strain on supplies and consequently, prices.
So far I have mentioned, weather, supply, and political factors, there is another issue that is affecting food shortages everywhere, irregardless of what geographical location you may be, what country or continent or city you may live in.
The buying power of money, whether local currency, country, region or the world recognized currency standard such as the U.S. dollar, inflation will erode the value of any necessary item such as fuel and food. As long as governments continue to print paper money to try to cover it’s debts, it continues to further the erosion of a currency, thus weakening the ability to buy what is needed to carry on and survive or maintain a certain quality of life.
The more money you print, the worse it gets and at some point, history shows us, economies and currencies become unsustainable.
We see it happening now to the Euro, it doesn’t have much time, Greece is in turmoil with unrest there, no jobs, high cost of goods, with citizens too dependent on the government, and it is not just Greece. Many places around the world are feeling the effects of these symptoms, and they are not just minor symptoms.
For all of us here in the U.S. the picture and signs are just the same, but there is one more thing that a lot of Americans don’t realize, and it will be a major shock if it happens, and that is; the dollar ceasing to be the world’s reserve currency. If you thought food and gas prices are high now, hyperinflation will literally take the cake, most likely resulting in civil unrest or riots.
Plan now for yourself the things which you have control over and take steps to prepare, this means emergency backup supplies and a good dependable stash of food. It does not seem to be getting any better and one hopes this does not come to us, but it may.
