More developments today in the case of Michelle Le, the missing California nursing student who disappeared back in May.

A former friend of Le has been arrested and charged with murder.

Surveillance video, cell phone records, and DNA evidence led to this weeks’s arrest of Giselle Esteban, according to Lt. Roger Keener of the Hayward Police Department.

Le disappeared from Kaiser Permanente Hayward Medical Center in northern California on May 27 of this year as she was walking from her vehicle to the garage.

Blood stains belonging to Michelle Le were discovered on the inside Le’s car and matched those found on a pair of sneakers in Esteban’s home.

CCTV footage from the parking garage in which Le was last seen also shows Esteban in that same garage before and after Le’s arrival there, leading authorities to believe Le was assaulted while there.

The FBI also tracked movements of Le’s cell phone and, later, Esteban’s phone in the hours after her disappearance. As it turns out, both phones moved around Alameda County in approximately the same path and timeframe, Keener said.

Police said that although they think they’ve figured out what happened to Michelle Le, they’re still very much committed to finding her body and figuring out exactly what happened.

“Today does not mark the end of the investigation,” Keener said. “We will not consider this investigation complete until Michelle is found.”

“Some of the questions about how [Le] met her demise may not be known until she is found,” he added.

At this time, there is no word on the relationship between the two and no one is willing to speculate on a motive for the apparent killing.

It’s been speculated that Giselle Esteban’s ex-boyfriend, with whom she had a child, had a relationship with Michelle Le. The ex-boyfriend filed a restraining order against Esteban just three days prior to Le’s disappearance, citing Esteban’s erratic behavior and threats of suicide.

Le’s family issued a statement after Esteban’s arrest, saying that Esteban, who’s been a suspect since May, “dragged this out longer than it had to go,” and that their “primary concern was and is and always will be to find Michelle and bring her home with us.”
