Forget The University Have A Baby Instead
My friends and I are as angry as one can get with the advice given to our daughters by high school counselors. These so called counselors gave our daughters some of the worst advice ever.
While in high school they told our daughters not to have sex. They also insisted that they go to some rather expensive universities. They strongly suggested, insisted really, that they get a college degree.
What a bunch of garbage!! We should sue these counselors because they haven’t a clue. They drilled it into our daughters that having a baby would destroy their lives. That having a baby would be the end of their education. That not having a college degree would condemn them to flipping burgers the rest of their lives.
Nothing could be further from the truth. They lied to our children. These counselors are for the most part Republicans. Conservative right leaning Republicans lied to our children which are for the most part middle of the road Democrats. Could that be the reason they lied?
Our daughters finished high school and continued on to college. The majority of those graduating high school enrolled in expensive four year universities. They worked hard and gave up a lot to finish college. Most graduated college with a teaching degree. Others majored in business and graduated with a double major as my daughter did.
The sixteen girls that make up my daughters circle of close friends recently held a reunion and asked themselves and us, the parents, questions we could not answer.
The question? Why was getting pregnant and having a baby so bad for us and good for others? Why was getting a college education so important for us while others just like us barely graduated high school and get paid way more than all of us combined?
It seems that the girls have been following the saga of Bristol Palin. The daughter of Sarah Palin who was raised according to conservative family values, the daughter that was raised by the abstinence only rule. The daughter that Sarah Palin and the conservative right are now holding out as an exemplary example of how a young lady should live her life.
Bristol Palin became pregnant at the tender age of seventeen and became a single mother at age eighteen. She has no education to speak of but makes $30,000.00 per speaking engagement. She speaks on the subject of not getting pregnant outside of wedlock.
She has appeared on numerous television shows including Dancing With The Stars. At this writing she has been offered a radio talk show host job for around $150,000.00 per year. Soon after giving birth she purchased a condo in Anchorage Alaska. More recently she purchased a five bedroom home in Arizona for over $170,000.00. She paid for the home in cash.
Most of the girls that invested four years in higher education and received a teaching degree are now paid $30,000.00 to $35,000.00 working as a first year teacher. Bristol Palin makes this amount for just one speech telling others how she enjoyed sex outside of wedlock and became pregnant.
The girls that received a degree in business have been getting job offers in the $40,000.00 to $48,000.00 range. Bristol Palin with no higher education, no degree of any kind, gets offers of $150,000.00 and better.
Our daughters either live with us or in seedy one bedroom apartments. Their dreams of some day owning a two or three bedroom home have to wait while the young lady who enjoyed sex out of wedlock and gave birth to a baby without getting married purchases a five bedroom home for over $170,000.00 and she pays for it in cash.
Yes Bristol Palin is an exemplary example of what a young lady should be. We need more like her. In fact in order to get a jump on Bristol I recommend that girls should start trying to get pregnant as soon as possible.
Bristol started having sex in high school. Perhaps our young girls should start having sex and getting pregnant in junior high.
