Food safety tips for your baby feeding
Here is the list to remember related to baby feeding
- Keep raw meat, fish and eggs away from other foods. Wash hand thoroughly after contact with any of these foods and use separate chopping boards for meat and fish; raw fruits and vegetables.
- Only reheat food once and make sure it is reheated at a high temperature to kill off the bacteria,
- Do not keep your baby’s half-eaten food for a later meal because the saliva introduced from your baby’s spoon will breed bacteria quickly.
- Always date food stored in the freezer so that food that is past its prime or that has even deteriorated and become harmful is never eaten.
- Do not leave food unrefrigerated since bacteria multiply rapidly at room temperature.
- Cover all food and drink securely to protect it against contamination by germ-carrying insects and keep pets away from food and kitchen work surface.
- Always wash your hands thoroughly before preparing or offering food and wash your baby’s hands before feeding.
- Do not use bottled mineral water since it is not sterile and also tends to have high sodium content.
- For thinning purees to the desired consistency of runny yogurt, use cooled boiled tap water or your baby’s usual milk
- Feeding bottles and spoons should be sterilized for the first 12 months and bowls should be immersed in boiling water for 10 minutes. Use a clean dish towel to dry utensils.
- Do not add salt, sugar or honey to baby food. Salt can strain immature kidneys and cause dehydration, sugar and honey encourage a sweet tooth and the latter carries a slight risk of botulism infection.
- Test the temperature of all food before giving it to your baby. If using defrosted food, reheat until piping hot and let it cool before offering it.
