eBay bans sellers from giving negative feedback

    Posted about 4 years ago

eBay sellers will no longer be able to leave critical comments about buyers. The ban does not extend to buyers, who will still be able to leave critical comments about their purchase. Sellers say this will deny them the information about the potential buyer.

Presently both parties can rate each other thus users themselves police each other. This system weeds out dishonest traders but it has it's flaws.

eBay says the system is being misused. For example sellers refuse to give positive comments to buyers until they receive a positive feedback from them. Some users don't give negative feedback in case they suffer negative comment in retaliation.

If the buyer doesn't pay up, the seller can contact eBay and they will take appropriate action.

The company plans to ban critical comments in May.

Also, last week the sellers were told they would have to pay 40% more fees to use the site. Now, they must give 7.5 % instead of 5.25%

    • Don't quite agree with it. Yes, stuff like mutual ratings and all does go on, but this way, nobody will know the past history of the buyers as the sellers can't give any feedback.

    • This is unfair for the Ebay users as because of the Negative comments they become aware of that particular buyer.Instead of this policy Ebay should just verify or check the negative comment is right or not and take the measures accordingly. The Fake negative comments should be deleted.
    • well, i think its a step in the right direction from the ebay. i have purchased quite a few items from ebay & some of the goods have been hardly up to the mark...i wanted to leave a negative feedback for those sellers but my friends suggested that i should refrain myself from doing so. according to my friend, if i gave that seller a negative feedback, i would also receive the same from him/her!! i just hope that from now on it would be easier for the folks like me, to judge a seller as he is!

    • This one is a tough call. Doing business over the internet is pretty risky and a system needs to be in place for both buyers and sellers to create a relationship based on trust. I personally would not sell products using ebay if i did not have access to buyer information.
