The U.S. District Court in Lufkin will hold preliminary detention hearings today for five of the 11 alleged “Kings Court” gang members who law enforcement authorities arrested on June 8 in connection with a large-scale drug trafficking ring in East Texas. Hearings begin at 1 p.m. and are scheduled to last until around 2:30 today at the Ward R. Burke Federal Courthouse.
At the time of the arrests, First Assistant U.S. Attorney John Ratcliffe said the drug ring provided cocaine, marijuana and a small amount of methamphetamine to areas in East Texas and to places as far east as Georgia and as far north as Oklahoma.
Arresting authorities seized a safe containing more than $41,000 in cash, an amount they believe to be from illegal drug sales, Ratcliffe said in a previous interview with The Lufkin Daily News. The government had been following the activities of a Lufkin/Nacogdoches drug distribution ring since late 2002, authorities said.
The five gang members and names of his or her defending attorney included ring leader José Reyes Garcia, to be represented by attorney Roger Moss; Raul Gutierrez Perez, aka “Blue,” represented by attorney Jon Anderson; Oscar Aparicio Solares, aka “Flaco,” represented by attorney Frank Henderson; Richard Solis, aka “Roach,” who has declined an attorney; and Yessica Carillo, represented by attorney James Huggler.
In an unrelated case, alleged Prosperity BankTexas robbers James Valentinisdee, 31, of Porter and Dana Lawson, 37, of Crockett will have their initial appearances on indictment at 10 a.m. today at the Ward R. Burke Federal Courthouse.
According to the federal indictment, Valentinisdee entered Prosperity BankTexas in Crockett on May 3, presented a note that demanded money from the teller, took the cash and fled the bank in a car driven by his alleged accomplice Lawson. If convicted, Valentinisdee and Lawson could face up to 20 years in prison and and owe the government a $250,000 fine.
Assistant U.S. District Attorney Lisa Flournoy is the prosecuting attorney for the case. The name of the defense attorney was not available on the schedule.
