Celebrities with Eating Disorders

Alanis Morissette

Canadian singer Alanis Morissette has admitted that she has struggled with anorexia and bulimia between the ages of 14 and 18 when she was trying to break into the music business. She wrote the song "Perfect" (from Jagged Little Pill album), inspired by her eating disorder recovery. Morissette said at the time her weight jumped up and down between 15 and 20 pounds. She would barely eat for months at a time, subsisting on Melba toast, carrots and black coffee."Constantly dizzy," she recounts about once having nothing to eat one day while a person working on one of her videos put back a large pizza."He was like, 'You can't eat. And don't even put milk in (the coffee,)" Morissette said a friend intervened after one particularly drastic weight loss, which is when she started therapy and learning about eating disorder.

Alexandra Paul

Actress Alexandra Paul (Baywatch) struggled with an eating disorder in the past. Therapy is very good at helping us understand ourselves and at giving us other tools to deal with life’s challenges. I also recommend a 12 Step Program (Overeaters Anonymous, which deals with all eating disorders, really helped me.It is never easy, but it is definitely worth it!

Ana Carolina Reston

She weighed only 88 pounds and died at 21 because of generalized infection as a result of anorexia.

"Take care for your children because their loss is irreparable," Reston's mother, Miriam, told the O Globo newspaper. "Nothing can make the pain go away. No money in the world is worth the life of your child."

The model's cousin, Dani Grimaldi, told the Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper that Reston also battled bulimia.

It is always heartbreaking to me when somebody dies as the result of not getting treatment for an eating disoder. Especially, at the young age of 21. This is also why I am strongly against pro-ana websites. Those who promote pro-anorexia do not understand how serious anorexia can be. It is an eating disorder that needs to be taken serious.

Ashlee Simpson

Sister of singer and actress Jessica Simpson has publicly admitted that she battled with an eating disorder during her pre-teen years. "I was around a lot of girls with eating disorders." Simpson says she learned a lesson from the experience and has learned to love her body."I think I have good curves, and they're womanly," she says. "I hate it when girls lose their curves. "I think it's sexy not to be a bone and it's sad when people get too weight-conscious and don't look in the mirror and see themselves as being as beautiful as they are."

Britney Spears Britney Spears

Us Weekly reports: Spears is in the middle of a divorce with aspiring rapper Kevin Federline. The pair have two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James. The pop princess was sent to Promises rehab center for alcohol abuse and was released on March 20. She seemed as if she was ready to turn her life around but recent reports say she is drinking again, binge shopping and eating too much. Star magazine estimates Spears weighs at least 135 pounds now.

It has surfaced that Britney Spears told doctors at rehab that she has been bulimic since the age of 16. Reportedly Britney told staff at Promises that she had the disease for years, with the exception of her pregnancies. According to an American magazine, Spears admitted that she “pigs out” on junk food before she purges. A source told the Daily Express.

Geri Halliwell

Singer Geri Halliwell (former Ginger Spice from the Spice Girls) publicly admitted suffering from bulimia and binge eating for several years. "I realised I couldn't control this monster anymore. I needed to find help." Her piece of advice for those who are struggling - "I can honestly tell you from personal experience, that worrying about an eating disorder really can get you down. There's nothing to be ashamed about. You'll be amazed at the difference it'll make to your whole life if you tell someone you trust. There are lots of people who want to help and you really CAN'T fight this one on your own. It might be a hard decision to make, to tell people and to seek help but, trust me it's nowhere as hard as trying to deal with it on your own." Geri has written a book called "Just For The Record" in which she talks with brutal honesty about her life, including battling and overcoming eating disorders, which she has struggled with since childhood.

Jane Fonda

Actress, activist, athlete, wife and mother, was one of the first famous women to openly discuss her eating disorder. In the late 1970s, she went public with her "bulimarexia," the binge-and-vomit cycle that nearly ruined her health. Overwhelmed by the demands of the Hollywood culture, she spent nearly 20 years in the relentless pursuit of thinness.

Janet Jackson

Singer Janet Jackson has been quoted in the media as having an ongoing battle with an eating disorder. Sources say she has been battling weight problems most of her life, and recently blew-up to 160 pounds from her normal weight of 118 pounds. "She'll go months eating whatever she can get her hands on, and then she'll go months eating just salads and fruits and drinking Evian water," the family source said. "She's had this feast-or-famine eating disorder for years and has gotten up to 200 pounds or more at times." The source revealed that Jackson is back with her personal trainer, Tony Martinez, in an effort to tone up by the time her new album is released.

Karen Carpenter

Went on a water diet to lose weight and, as she put it, to appear more attractive. Continued to diet even after losing 20 lbs, until her death at the age of 32. She died of cardiac arrest due to anorexia and weighed only 80 lbs.

Kate Beckinsale

Actress Kate Beckinsale (Underworld, Pearl Harbor) struggled with an eating disorder during her teen years, before she decided to start acting. She has frankly spoken in interviews about her eating problem. Thanks to the support of her family and therapy Kate was able to recover from anorexia. "People keep asking me about it but I don't want to be famous for being a former anorexic."

Beckinsale has upset many parents of teens afflicted with anorexia even though the actress is a former anorexic herself.Beckinsale said she thought the disorder was caused by an unhealthy home life and compared "anorexia, alcoholism and drug abuse in teens" to "crack whores".

Kate Winslet

British actress Kate Winslet (Titanic, Sense and Sensibility) has admitted to struggling with eating disorders and Kate is honest and outspoken about her life-long weight problems. "My uncle is a chef. My mother is a fantastic cook. We're all bigeaters. It was kind of unavoidable." In high school, she was a bit heavier and classmates called her "Blubber." The criticisms led to depression and eating disorders. Today, Kate Winslet is healthy, she loves her body and her curves and refuses to play the 'super-skinny game'. "I'm happy with the way I am. I'm not like American film stars. I'm naturally curvy. This is me, like it or lump it. People think that if a woman isn't rail-thin, then there must be something wrong with her - it's such nonsense."

Katharine McPhee

Katherine McPheeSinger Katharine McPhee, American Idol runner-up, struggled with bulimia while auditioning for American Idol in San Francisco in August 2005. She suffered from an eating disorder for 6 years, since she was 17 years old. After her audition was successful, Katharine decided to get help. "My bulimia was really getting out of control."

She enrolled at Los Angeles's Eating Disorder Center of California, where she spent three months undergoing group and individual therapy six days a week. Katharine says today that American Idol has saved her life. She believes that if she didn't audition for the show, she would probably still struggle. Katharine has learned that there is no "bad" food - you can have everything as long as you watch how much you eat.

Keira Knightley

British actress Keira Knightley on Tuesday denied rumors she was suffering from the eating disorder anorexia. Speaking a day after showing off her rail thin figure in a low-cut, backless bronze Gucci dress she wore at the London premiere of her latest film prompted questions about her weight, she added that she had a family history of the illness. "It was really weird, they said that to me yesterday," the 21-year-old told a news conference, referring to the premiere of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" in which she stars alongside Johnny Depp. Kiera looking thin in swim suitKeira insists that she is not anorexic even though her family has a past with the deadly eating disorder. Last year Keira told the press, "I've got a lot of experience with anorexia, my grandmother and great-grandmother suffered from it, and I had a lot of friends at school who suffered from it. I know it's not something to be taken lightly and I don't." She also seemed startled when reporters asked her how it felt to be labeled an anorexic. "I had no idea that I was. I'm not saying there aren't people in the film industry that suffer from it, because I am sure that there are. But I'm quite sure I don't have it." It's this exact sort of denial that is commonplace with women who have the eating disorder.

Kirsten Dunst Doctor VisitKirsten Dunst

Kirsten Dunst paid a mystery visit to a doctor’s office in London on Tuesday. According to the signs on the door, she either saw a general practitioner, a speech and language consultant or a doctor at the center foe eating disorders. Many speculate that she has a eating disorder like many celebraties under the pressure of the Hollywood lifestyle.

Lindsey Lohan

Lindsay Lohan has finally come clean on rumors about her incredibly shrinking body, admitting in the new issue of Vanity Fair that her low body weight was due to bulimia. She also tells the magazine that she has experimented with drugs in the past. "I was sick," the singer/actress says in the magazine's February issue. "Everyone was scared. And I was scared too. I had people sit me down and say, 'You're going to die if you don't take care of yourself.' "One of those interventions took place in May 2005 when Lohan — who was hospitalized Monday after an asthma attack (see "Lindsay Lohan Hospitalized After Asthma Attack") — hosted "Saturday Night Live." Cast members Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, who had worked with Lohan in "Mean Girls," were concerned that the actress was getting too thin. "Amy was good and tough on her," Fey tells Vanity Fair, "saying, 'You're too skinny ... I'm not going to ask you why, but you're too skinny and I don't like it.' "

Magali Amadei

Amadei was born in 1974 in Nice, France, and began her modeling career at a young age. She achieved international recognition doing cover work for such publications as Harper's Bazaar , Cosmopolitan, Elle, Glamour and Vogue . She also appeared in the movie "The Wedding Planner," with Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Lopez. As a result of her own battle with bulimia, Amadei became the first top female model to step forward and tell her story on behalf of an eating disorders organization, the American Anorexia/Bulimia Association. "My battle with bulimia lasted seven years. I would eat - binge really - and purge it by vomiting afterwards, eating and vomiting up to seven times a day."

Mariah Carey

After a period of relative normality, it's good to see communications between Earth and Planet Mariah functioning again, and as bonkers as ever. The latest peep into Carey world centers on Mariah's dietary requirements, which seem surprisingly normal... for an 18 month-old baby. So we skip past Mariah telling Marie Claire about her "up and down" weight, straight to the bit where she admits to using a bib when she's eating in bed.She said: "I am just like, 'Whatever, nobody is looking at me for once!' That's why I don't really like to eat in public. When people say, 'Mariah never eats in public,' I'm like, 'You're right.'" And y'know, diamond-encrusted bibs are like, soooo '80s!

Mary-Kate Olsen

After months of speculation about her emaciated appearance, Mary-Kate Olsen has entered treatment for an eating disorder (anorexia) . Fans and celeb magazines expressed shock and concern at Mary-Kate's appearance April 29 at the unveiling of the twins' star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Melanie Chisholm

Singer Melanie Chisholm (Melanie C - former Sporty Spice from the Spice Girls) publicly admitted suffering from an eating disorder and depression. Throughout the time she was in the "Spice Girls", Melanie alternated between starving herself and excessive exercise. "My mum assumed my tiny body was a result of being busy with the band and working out regularly."

Nicole Richie As an Eating Disorder expert, Dr. Jantz was interviewed by Weekly InTouch Magazine (Sept 4, 2006, Vol.5 Issue 36, page 15) about Nicole Richie. "Nicole could die if she doesn't stop dieting," Dr. Jantz, an eating disorder specialist and the founder of A Place of Hope treatment center in Seattle, tells In Touch. "She's putting herslef in a dangerous place."

Nicole RichieUS Weekly reports on Nicole Richie’s eating disorder and her treatment:

On October 26, 2006 Nicole Richie’s rep announced that the size-0 actress, whose weight slipped to an estimated 87 pounds this summer, was undergoing treatment for her weight issues.

“I’m not in rehab, and I don’t have an eating disorder,” Richie tells Us. “I’m getting the help I need and taking care of my health.”

Both Nicole’s dad, Lionel Richie, and mom, Brenda Harvey Richie, have been concerned for some time, say family insiders, and the 25-year-old starlet was deeply affected by her relatives’ shock when she arrived in Alabama to attend her grandmother’s October 21 funeral.

“They told her she was too skinny and it really hit home,” says a friend who attended the memorial. “It was a turning point.”

Though Richie won’t confirm the nature of her treatment, Us has learned that she is being seen at a Newport Beach, California, facility, where she is undergoing doctor consultations and blood tests.

If, as she claims, she does not have an eating disorder, i.e. she is not suffering from anorexia, but rather a stress related illness that causes a loss of appetite, then why does she also claim to be totally happy with her life as well. Surely one counteracts the other. I mean, if you are suffering from stress to the extent that it causes you to lose the amount of weight NIcole has, the that is a fair indication of a serious problem and is surely an eating disorder.
The other way of looking at it is reasonably happy, in which case she is in denial and does have an eating disorder.

Either way, denial is the problem and the sooner she gets the help she needs the better.

Nicole Richie leaves treatment within first 72 hours
After less than 72 hours in the center, Richie checked herself out, explaining that she wanted to go shopping, reports Star magazine.

The staffers at Beau Monde begged her to stay, a source is quoted saying, “Nicole is in complete denial and oblivious to how sick she really is.”

Not long after she checked out of the center, Richie was spotted partying with Lindsay Lohan. She snuck out the second floor window of her rehab center, shimmied down a palm tree, found the nearest limo, and hopped a ride to Hyde Saturday night … all so she could drink, party… and pass out.

is getting outpatient treatment according to reports from Star, National Enquirer and yes, Perez Hilton. Nicole Richie 5/23/2007
Nicole Richies Does Treatment
Nicole originally checked in to the treatment facility on May 11th, and National Enquirer and Star have a photo of her going into Beau Monde Treatment Center in Corona Del Mar, on May 19th. Nicole's publicist is denying everything but sources at The National Enquirer and Star magazine insist they stand by their story 100% that Richie recently sought treatment for anorexia and substance abuse . "We figured Nicole's publicist would try to deny this ," a source tells PerezHilton.com. "We have excellent sources , though." Says a source for both magazines, "She's at home now . As we wrote in the story, she's now getting outpatient treatment."

Nicole RichieDecember 2006-Nicole Arrested
The predawn arrest of the 25-year-old co-star of “The Simple Life” came about six weeks after it was revealed that she had checked herself into a treatment facility to address weight-loss issues.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department report showed the the 5-foot-1-inch actress weighed 85 pounds at the time of her booking.

Officer Todd Workman, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol, said police encountered Richie at a standstill blocking the carpool lane on the Ventura Freeway in Burbank at about 1:45 a.m. He said the officers were responding to reports from other motorists of a driver going the wrong way on the busy highway.

Although Richie’s car was pointed in the right direction when police found her, her black sports utility vehicle matched the description of an SUV seen entering the freeway against traffic nearby, Workman said.

Workman said Richie was placed under arrest after she failed a field sobriety test, and that she admitted to officers that she had taken the prescription painkiller Vicodin and smoked marijuana. A preliminary alcohol screening test was negative, he said.

According to Workman, Richie was alone in her vehicle and on the cell phone when police approached her. He described her as “very cooperative” and that she told police she had been following a friend on the freeway when she got lost.

Richie, who has previously undergone treatment for heroin addiction, was subsequently booked into jail on a DUI charge and was released a few hours later after posting $15,000 bail, authorities said.

Representatives for the daughter of singer Lionel Richie were not immediately available for comment.

Nicole Richie PregnantCasa Palmera reports: At only 25 years old Nicole Richie may be in danger of losing her baby if she does not get help from an anorexia treatment center.
Medical experts say that her battle with anorexia mixed with alcohol and cocaine abuse are probably putting her baby’s life in danger. If Nicole was to enter an anorexia treatment center she would probably get the help she needed and her pregnancy would not be as at risk. The 12 weeks pregnant Nicole still struggles to stay sober everyday. Experts also believe that she still has a long way to go to become completely sober. Doctors say that if Nicole had drugs in her system when she got pregnant or shortly there after, she has a greater risk of birth defects, or even a miscarriage. Nicole’s anorexia also presents her pregnancy with another huge risk. Many are surprised that she was even able to get pregnant at all. During the course of her pregnancy she will need to gain 40 pounds or more just to be able to feed and nourish the baby properly.

Oprah Winfrey

The most influential person on TV, Oprah Winfrey, who was raped at the age of nine by her nineteen year old cousin and repeatedly sexually abused, struggled with disordered eating. Oprah, who said about her weight "It's always a struggle. I've felt safer and more protected when I was heavy. Food has always been comforting." Born to unmarried parents and raised initially by a grandmother on a Mississippi farm with no indoor plumbing, Winfrey was reading the Bible and reciting in church by the time she was three, becoming at the age of 19 Nashville, TN's first female and first black TV-news anchor. But there was the dark side that accompanied the precocity, the sexual abuse she suffered as a child and an eating disorder that she seems finally to have licked (she admitted on-air to once eating a package of hot dog buns drenched in maple syrup).

Paris Hilton

The irony of Paris’ situation is that she now resembles her old friend Mary-Kate Olsen. The pair fell out after Paris started dating MK’s ex-boyfriend, Greek shipping billionaire Stavros Niarchos days after he finished with MK who had her own public battle with an eating disorder. The friend continued: “Paris looks like Mary-Kate…just before she went into rehab. Her parents are desperate to get her into a clinic.” Before she totally disappears…

Paula Abdul

Singer and dancer , famous for her daring necklines and skin-tight dresses, has a secret weapon for keeping her figure sexy and trim. She employs a highly priced "food cop" to patrol her kitchen.

Top Hollywood nutritionist Yolanda Berman keeps a strict eye on what 36-year-old Abdul keeps in her pantry, cupboards and fridge. Abdul once thought nothing of sitting down to wolf down a whole cake, a bag of biscuits and a tub of ice cream. Then she would retreat to the bathroom and purge herself of the food. She had to overcome the eating disorder bulimia, whose sufferers binge and purge, by checking into a clinic in 1994. Abdul was once also an exercise junkie, trying to burn off the extra kilojoules she had taken in by over-indulging in food. "I used to be a fanatic," she says. "I used to exercise four or five times a day. "Now it's different. I don't exercise too much for the wrong reasons. Three times a week I'll do some cardiovascular or aerobic activity.

Princess Diana of Wales

Princess Diana struggled with an eating disorder and also admitted that she used to self-harm herself. The following is an extract of an interview of Princess Diana about her battle with bulimia - "I had bulimia for a number of years. And that's like a secret disease. You inflict it upon yourself because your self-esteem is at a low ebb, and you don't think you're worthy or valuable. You fill your stomach up four or five times a day - some do it more - and it gives you a feeling of comfort. It's like having a pair of arms around you, but it's temporarily, temporary. Then you're disgusted at the bloatedness of your stomach, and then you bring it all up again. And it's a repetitive pattern, which is very destructive to yourself." Diana also admitted in a television interview that she intentionally cut her arms and legs and had thrown herself down a flight of stairs on more than one occasion.

Renee Zellweger

Renee Zellweger is reportedly being paid a $3.2 million bonus to pack on the pounds for her reprised role as Bridget Jones, reports IMDB.com.
The petite Chicago star is already on a high-fat diet to achieve the rounder figure needed for the British singleton - and film producers have guaranteed her $US225,000 ($A340,000) for every kilo she manages to put on.
"Renee's getting nearly $15 million for the sequel and the bonus is on top of that," says a source. "She hates gaining weight to play Bridget and knows she's going to have a hard time losing it again."

Tara Reid

American Pie actress Tara Reid struggled with anorexia after the breakup with fiance MTV DJ Carson Daly.

Teri Hatcher

Some sources claim she is battling an eating disorder, but Teri claims she's just careful about what she eats, adding: 'The only thing I'm guilty of is being too athletic and refusing to eat garbage. I eat a lot of fruit'.

"Desperate Housewives" star Teri Hatcher slammed accusations about her having an eating disorder, claiming she has a very healthy life. The rumours started after Teri, 40, was photographed looking too thin for her age. The actress denied having problems with her weight and confessed she doesn’t want to give a wrong message to young girls around the world.

Tracey Gold

Tracey Gold began her career at age four by appearing in a Pepsi-Cola print advertisement. Tracey reveals that, ironically, the actress was nothing like her honors student character in ABC's, Growing Pains, she was failing her subjects in school. She was finally diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), a learning disability that affects millions of Americans. But it was just one of many "growing pains" Tracey experienced. She was also diagnosed with anorexia nervosa and bulimia in 1990. She had almost starved herself to death. But her family, friends and husband helped her overcome the disorders. When she returned to acting, she starred in a dozen TV movies.

Victoria Beckham

Posh Spice of Spice Girls has admitted for the first time that she suffered from an eating disorder. She made the revelation in an extract from her forthcoming autobiography, Learning To Fly, which was published in the Mail on Sunday newspaper. Beckham has denied that she had anorexia in the past. Beckham described her illness and said that for a time she was "obsessed" with her appearance.

W hitney -Houston

The crowd watched in shock as a frail Whitney Houston hit the stage Friday night during the Michael Jackson concert at Madison Square Garden where she appeared "skeletal" and high on drugs. As this photo shows, one of the world's most vital pop stars has become a shell of her former self in the year and half since she last publicly performed. In the past, rumors flared about Whitney's alleged drug addiction after missing and bungling shows like the above mentioned. Despite weight loss rumors because of anorexia or bulimia, Houston insists "I am not sick. Let' s get that straight. I've always been a thin girl. I am not going to be fat, ever."

Whitney's Battle Continues

Whitney HoustonWhat happened to Whitney? It is amazing that someone so talented can have deteriorated so much. Is her marriage to Bobby Brown to blame or was her downfall inevitable? Who knows?! Since her 1992 marriage to bad boy Brown Houston has been on a steady decline. The marriage has been filled with rumors of infidelity, drug abuse, eating disorders, and physical and mental abuse. This is not the first time Houston has checked herself into rehab. She has tried kicking her addictions twice before once in 2004 and once in 2005. She needs to get her act together, if not for her, for her daughter Bobbi Kristina.

Nazca Lines

Etched into the earth on the Nazca Plains in Peru are giant symbols drawn perfectly straight. Some are hundreds of metres long. They look as if they were drawn by some giant hand two thousand years ago. And the strange thing is, they can only be seen from the air. So how did the ancient Nazcans draw them? Researchers say they could have created hot air balloon or kites to fly and view their work. Indeed, an experiment was carried out and it proved that the Nazcans could have made a working balloon. The symbols themselves are of animals and plants. Yet some are long strips of land without any direct
