Creators Asking for Jersey City Project Feedback

I was asked to watch a short segment for a potential new show called Untitled Jersey City Project. It’s just a quick 2 minute or so preview, and frankly I have mixed feelings. When a person is asked for thoughts about a storyline or the concept or even input on the chosen actors – all via watching such a small portion – it’s a tough call.

Here’s just a portion of Episode 1:

My feeling after watching was, in all honesty, one of “I don’t know.” With very little dialog to go by, it’s hard to tell if the writers will be or can be responsible for taking this out of the mundane into a real “edge of your seat” show. There are tons of similar, existing premises already on television. It all comes down to not just the actors (he’s cute), but what comes out of their mouths. So far it has a CSI, NCIS, Law & Order feel that is all too common on television today. Plot is everything. Twists and turns (and no repeating bad guy) hold my attention the best. Each show needs to be able to stand on its own feet. This way if a person comes to watch halfway through a season, the whole story doesn’t hinge on having watched from the very beginning (those are the ones I personally like best).

Untitled Jersey City Summary

It’s assumed by the viewer that “across the Hudson from New York City” Jersey has managed to survive some catastrophe (we don’t know what). However, the show’s concept is the rebuilding of a bright, shiny attempt to create wonder out of chaos. Granted, it is very difficult to give potential viewers much insight when the segment is so short.

However, you’ll notice that toward the end the person who appears to be a main character emerges from his car, and somehow (magically) the woman he was sleeping with is with him. Yet in the first portion, she’s definitely still in bed while the main actor is grabbing his phone and heading out of the house (on the run because of a phone message). Stuff like this bothers me. I pay attention. There is no way the woman could have made it to the bathroom let alone the closet before this guy was speeding his way down to his construction site. I believe “eye candy” was the reason for sticking her into a shot where she does not really belong.

Also, the main actor was speeding and the cops following. So, in my mind, when he’s surrounded and they pull their guns on him it does not make sense. He just arrived. The cops soon follow. There is something off about the timing and needs to be revisited by the writers.

Your Jersey City Thoughts?

The creators have developed 8 “short-form episodes” and what I do give them full credit for is asking for feedback and input from their potential viewing audience. No show that I’m aware of does this – you just typically turn on the television and whatever is there is there.
