Cities at Night from Space
Way above the Earth, Expedition 16 Flight Engineer Dan Tani took night photos of cities with a 400 mm lens. Previous attempts to take photos like this failed because of the high speed of the space station and photos came out blurry. Thankfully, astronaut Don Pettit, part of Expedition 6, solved this problem by constructing a device called a barn-door tracker using spare parts from around the space station. This moves the camera to compensate for the movement of the Space Station relative to the Earth below, resulting in clearer photos.
