Breaking news:Two new earthquakes around the New Zealand city of Christchurch
A new earthquake, of magnitude 6, hit Christchurch on Monday, the second in the day, announced the American Geophysical Service (USGS). The second quake was centered 14 kilometers from Christchurch, at a depth of 9 kilometers. The city, the second largest in New Zealand, had been affected recently by a 5.2-magnitude quake whose epicenter was 10 kilometers from Christchurch, at a depth of 11 kilometers. The first earthquake caused damage, but apparently caused no casualties, police said. Christchurch has witnessed two major earthquakes in recent months. Much of the city of Christchurch is not inhabited since the earthquake of magnitude 6.3 on February 22 that left 181 people, in what is considered the deadliest earthquake in the country in 80 years. Christchurch and was hit Sept. 4 by a first quake, magnitude 7, which left dead but not great damage. These new Earthquakes occur on the day of the opening of an investigation into the collapse of a building in central Christchurch, which left 106 people dead, including 65 foreign students during the earthquake of 22 February. In late May, scientists investigating on behalf of the government warned that the Christchurch area had a four chance of having another earthquake within a year. The simulations gave a rate of 23% chance of an earthquake of a magnitude between 6 and 7 in the Canterbury region over the next 12 months, according to the scientist Matthew Gerstenberger, institute GNS Science.
