Affiliate Marketing Safe in Colorado Due to Participation of Many
The Colorado Senate must read and vote on all the tax bills once more before they go back to the House for the final vote there. After that the bills go to the Governor, who is fully expected to sign every one of the bills into law. I am looking forward to the 10 minutes each Senator has to talk about his or her views and opinions about each bill, and especially our bill which is known as the Internet Ad Tax Bill.
Our concern as Affiliate Marketers was the Ad Tax Bill, which also passed but with any mention of "affiliates" omitted from the language. For us this is a wonderful victory in the political process. Since this has happened as it has, it begs the question: Should future grass roots actions like we experienced here in Colorado also include this possible outcome in other states? We all know this action by states to collect the sales tax on their respective resident's purchases from online retailers is the main thrust, and it will continue to be visited by states during the coming months and years. The issue is the recession, and the revenue shortfall states are all experiencing. They are all looking for ways to get more money, and this internet ad tax issue will be part of that effort. As affiliate marketing people, we all must get involved in the political process. In fact, all people should be involved, but the fact is that many individuals operate daily with a certain degree of apathy. They assume they cannot make a difference. Wrong! Especially if numbers of people in a state or nation work together, they can and do make a difference. We have seen this in action here in Colorado. We know advocacy and involvement gets the attention of lawmakers. So if you live in a state that is considering this kind of legislation, you should get involved with your fellow affiliates in your state. Seek the advocacy of support groups such as the PMA, local organizations and individuals who share your concerns. In Colorado our situation was somewhat unique in that both Legislative Houses had a Democrat majority in the elected membership. Each state will have a mix that might dictate the strategies you will use to communicate and in the order you will communicate. Work together and great things can be accomplished for our industry.
So for the moment due to huge involvement in Colorado from the affiliate community, we are safe and presumably will be able to continue to operate our businesses daily. As we watch this bill, and the other bills pass through the process we can be certain our involvement made the difference. Some of the best affiliate companies in our state got involved too, and their economic impact statements were of priceless value in the fight against the ad tax. Get in there and make a difference affiliates. Don't sit and watch from afar. Your voice counts.Denver Post Article on Colorado Tax Bills
