In case you are wondering Oscars are not made of solid gold.
The Oscar is made from a combination of tin, copper and antimony.
When the statuettes cool down they are sanded and polished for a hour to make them as smooth as possible.
Then they are checked for flaws. 
The Oscars and hand-dipped into copper, nickel, silver and finally 24-carat gold.
Once plated in gold the statuette are numbered and screwed onto the metal base.
In the end you get a 8.5lbs, 34cm tall statuette which will be flown to Los Angeles and wait for it's lucky recipient in February 24th via BBC |
