What Every College Student Ought to Know about "Music Piracy"

Any student on any campus in the country (United States) who is illegally downloading music from the internet may receive an email stating - they will be sued - in the coming months. F or using the school's computer network and a program called Ares.

However, they will have a chance to settle out of court. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) sent out a batch of 413 pre-litigation settlement emails to 22 universities.

At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, a student was accused of illegally downloading 381 songs by the (RIAA). The student said she could not imagine that anyone expected her to pay $3,000 — $7.87 per song — for some 1980s ballads and Spice Girls tunes, she downloaded for laughs in her dorm room. The student said, “obviously I knew it was illegal, but no one got in trouble for it’. Her parents paid the $3,000 settlement.

Another student received an email because he had downloaded 100 songs on a program called Lime Wire using the university network.

At least 500 university students nationwide have paid settlements to avoid being sued by the (RIAA). Students who do not take the offer face lawsuits — and minimum damages of $750 for each copyrighted recording shared if they lose.

The RIAA sent letters to 22 schools : Bates College (7 pre-litigation settlement letters), Brown University (12), Central Michigan University (24), Colby College (5), College of William & Mary (12), Cornell University (19), Fairfield University (15), Florida International University (16), Indiana University (28), Keene State University (19), Kent State University (19), Morehead State University (10), Ohio University (50), Oklahoma State University (16), University of Massachusetts – Amherst (32), University of Maryland System (25),University of Michigan – Ann Arbor (23), University of New Hampshire (17), University of New Mexico (16), University of Pennsylvania (17), University of Rochester (22), and Williams College (9)

Sicko

After watching Michael Moore’s documentary 9/11, I became an instant fan of his – he simply tells the ugly truth. Now he's back with 'Sicko' His new documentary film ‘Sicko' provides an emotional portrait of a collection of people and volunteer rescue workers from the September 11 attack. People whom are denied needed medical care, in spite of the fact that they have medical insurance. ‘Sicko’ focuses on the source of the healthcare crisis, which is a profit-driven insurance industry and exposes the industry's gluttony and control over America's political processes.

No ... but the name LimeWire does sound familiar. This compabny requires that you pay a fee for a year to download music. How then can this be Illegal?

Limeware is free. you download the basic version which is free, then you download the pro version with your basic version :p
you are very welcome.
I use bearshare. The basic version is excellent.

BUT TO ANY EVENTUAL SPY ON THIS BOARD! I'm no longer downloading music & movies because there is nothing interesting out right now :D Now click your heels 3 times & jump off a cliff!

Paying for something I could get for free is an aberration for the freakconomist I am!

youtube is wrong for sharing full tv shows. I don't think you can be in trouble for just watching though.

I guess ... I thought LimeWire was legal ... I think the point maybe if you download them to your computer to keep or sell for profit.

Then it becomes illegal.

Hi absatou,

I understand where you are coming from, that's why I posted this - to get the word out. This was reported on the net May 14, 2007.

I myself have downloaded music from the internet and I didnt think it was illegal because I paid for it - so can you imagine my surpise when they mentioned LimeWire - a student had a lawsuit filed against him for using LimeWire.

I double checked the sources and the RIAA to make sure it wasnt a hoax. This is Real.

I hope that people will help to get the word out.

When I was in Dakar I was downloading like crazy, because there is no control at all. But when I came to Paris the first thing my brother told me was that the authorities were not playing with illegal downloading.

The police sends you a warning by mail first & if you don't stop downloading, they come to your house & put you on arrest. I've seen documentaries about people who have been in trouble because of a movie or a song.
It's beyond excessive! but the french parliament voted for a law to allow free downloading as long as it wasn't for commercial purpose.
