Nermberg Zoo is Letting Polar Bear Cubs Starve

Letters and phone calls bombard the Nuremberg Zoo in Germany for letting polar bears cubs starve. 2 polar bear mothers Vera and Wilma gave birth three weeks and five weeks ago respectively. It's not known how many cubs are there, no one has seen them yet.

Wilma is showing all the characteristics of a good mother. But Vera looks like is starving her cubs to death.

She spends many hours outside her lair, neglecting her young and the hungry cries of bear cubs can be heard coming from the lair.

Nuremberg Zoo officials do not want to hand-rear the cubs and start another "Knutmania" They say hand-rearing does not correspond with the guidelines of the European preservation breeding program.

This is a photo of hand-reared Knut from the Berlin Zoo.

Nuremberg Zoo officials say Vera should practice and learn how to take care of the cubs and if something goes wrong she'll have other opportunities.

But the situation is not so grim, When Vera goes out the cubs start crying and she comes back in so there is a chance Vera will learn and become a good mother.

Nuremberg mayor criticizes the zoo for not even knowing how many cubs there are. "They should have cameras there" he says.

Awww.. the cub sure looks cute. Glad to hear that Vera starts to pay attention to the cubs. Just hope that they will grow up healthy and beautiful some day. Give Vera some time, I'm sure she will eventually learn about motherhood

Somehow the idea of zoo officials are right to comply with the guidelines of the European breeding program, yet they must set a standard wherein to break the rules if life of the cubs are at stake

How come they just want follow the rules if the cub really in danger situation. Can't blindly follow the rules without take some action to ensure this cub life. Maybe they should study more about polar bear

Why would they want to follow the rules if a cub is about to starve? Zoo keeepers can't really be that selfish, can they?
I think theyshould go back to school and research about polarbears more

The zoo keeper did not do their job? Pity to that cub. The cub really don't have any other source. Someone should fire the zoo keeper. The cub look really cute and i would like to keep it in my own house if i can do that

I hope that Vera will soon becaome a good mother in the end. I also wish that she should at least feed her child so as for it to be alive without any human aid. Well, it's just so typical for a mother to get angry to it's child. I just hope that Vera won't be that harsh as what was shown in other blogs here
