This is an old art from the Portuguese islands Azores. In the old times the whale hunting was one of the local jobs and they produced these lovely crafts. Nowadays there's no more whale hunting so this art is has almost disappeared.
yes, but it was a hard job because they chased the whales in small boats and with an arpon. they had to struggle with the whale to hunt her. It wasn't a mechanized or industrial hunt. It was a very dangerous job and a lot of men perished there.
I know it was very dangerous back then and i'm not condemning it because people acted according th what they believed and what they knew at those times.
