Russian president Vladimir Putin has warned Ukraine that he will aim nuclear missiles at it if Ukraine joins Nato and accepts the U.S missile shield on its territory. Russia wasn't happy about the expansion of Nato into former soviet countries - Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia and especially unhappy about the anti-missile defense sites in Eastern Europe: Poland and the Czech Republic. The Ukrainian politicians reacted by saying Ukraine has the right to form its own foreign and defense policies. "We are an independent state and will make our decisions regardless of what others say." This is a bit controversial move as half of the country don't want to join Nato. Personally I don't see why would any country want to join Nato. There are no advantages to gain from it. Russia won't attack any European country like Estonia or Ukraine - there's nothing to gain from such an act. Actually many of the recent wars were initiated by the U.S not Russia. Hm... come to think about it, maybe they are joining Nato because they don't want to get attacked by the U.S? Just kidding. There are disadvantages - Nato members have to pay millions for membership every year and they have to support the U.S in their wars. Now I'm not saying it's entirely "bad" But think about this. Lets take Eastern Europe for example. The countries there aren't very rich and prosperous and it would be wiser for them to spend the money on their own country and not fund their 10-men military forces. It's like Lithuania sent 30 men to Afghanistan, Latvia sent 25, Estonia 40 - now the Taliban and al-qaeda would be defeated for sure. Almost forgot those eastern european countries have their airspace patrolled by fighter planes. Why? What are they expecting to find there? it's not like the Taliban or Al-qaeda are flying up there. And the last thing. Lets say Russia does attack some countries in the Eastern Europe. Do you think Nato or any other country will try to stop them and risk a nuclear war over some tiny country God knows where? Don't think so.
As i said before it was wrong to recognize Kosovo's independence and there would be consequences to the rest of the world. Well here they are. Russia has announced that it would establish legal links with Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Georgia has already called an emergency security meeting saying Russia is annexing their territory. Georgia's foreign minister is calling Russia's move "de facto annexation" Now, I couldn't care less about Russia annexing Georgia's regions as far as I know these 2 regions want to be independent and want to join the Russian Federation. Plus many of
The United States has accused Iran of lying to the UN about its intentions to develop its nuclear program, saying Tehran clearly wants the capability to produce atomic weapons. Condoleezza Rice made the accusation as she flew to Moscow to win Russia's support for additional UN sanctions against Iran. (which a doubt she'll get) "There is a history of Iran not answering important questions about what is going on, and there is Iran pursuing nuclear technologies that can lead to nuclear weapons-grade material," she said on a flight to Moscow.
Putin gives me the chills. That's not to say that the US isn't somewhat out of line for putting missile defense systems all over the world, but then again, why should Russia care unless they plan to launch some missiles our way?
the missile defense also limits Russia's capability from retaliating if another country launches missiles first. If such an attack really happens the missile defense sites will be also targeted - bad news for the locals in Europe.
p.s Even with the missile defense in Eastern Europe, Russia can still launch missile over the North pole or across the pacific.
