Gordon Brown has arrived in Baghdad to discuss when Iraqi forces can take responsibility for security in the southern province of Basra.
Britain is expected to withdraw 2,000 soldiers from Bases in Basra early next year.
A British official said: "He's going to want to discuss the developing security situation in Basra and the prospect for Iraqis taking full responsibility, and the timescale for that. This is part of the process of preparing and finalising the statement to parliament early next week."
Despite the troop withdrawal, the UK would continue to maintain the capability to intervene in support of Iraqi security forces if needed, Brown said

Russian president Vladimir Putin has warned Ukraine that he will aim nuclear missiles at it if Ukraine joins Nato and accepts the U.S missile shield on its territory.
