A bloody presidential campaign

I've been think about the ongoing conflict between Russia and Georgia. I've come to a concussion that all this is just an expensive, bloody show for the western states.

If the leader of a country isn't insane then there should be logic in his actions. I've tried to to find that logic because I don't think Saakashvali is insane.

Let's review what happened during these several days. On the night of August 8 Georgia launched an attack on the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali and the surrounding villages using heavy artillery and air strikes. Also Georgian troops attacked Russian peacekeepers in the area. As it has been reported, many civilians (because there were no military troops in Tskhinvali when the attack began) were killed and the large section of the city destroyed.

After this attack Russia responded by bombing Georgian military sites around Tskhinvali and sent tank and infantry to aid the South Ossetians.

In the mean time Georgian president Michail Saakashvili has put on a wonder show about how the big, bad Russia is invading Georgia.

Now, let's think about this. Would it be logical to attack a region near Russia, killing civilians who have Russian passports and not expect Russia to intervene? I think not. Would it be logical for a small country like Georgia to fight Russia? I think not.

So the only logical conclusion I can draw from this is that Georgia wanted to provoke Russia so it would respond in force and Russia had no alternative but to respond because it had no choice, people's lives were at stake. (I applaud this decision because saving lives is more important than worrying about politics.) After the Russian response Saakashvili put on the show of a little, peaceful man who is completely innocent while giving countless interviews to western media. It even looked like he was more concerned with the interviews than with the conflict.

So it is all a provocation to make Russia look evil. Who would benefit from a negative image of Russia at this time? This might be a cliche but that country is United States of America. Not all of the USA only the part which wants McCain to win the presidential elections. You might say how's the conflict in Georgia and the US election are connected? It's simple. McCain is known for his negative attitude towards Russia and his campaign benefits from the bad image of Russia. The worse the Russian image is the more popular McCain is.

This might sound ridiculous but the US government has already used this tactic before. Remember 9/11? Remember the laws that were passed after it?

We live in a world where the public opinion is the most important factor so it's only natural to manipulate it or at least try.

I think your opinion makes sense. I don't know if it's the reality, but I have to agree that in the actual world politics "showbiz" it's the way to gain more power. Unfortunately!

I also don't know if that's true or not. Perhaps there's a lot more to that than what i've said, perhaps not. However I know that designating a national enemy help certain people get more support. Like it was done in 2001 by George W. Bush. I also think that political force Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Ukraine which try to distant themselves from Russia will use this opportunity to do that and get more people to their sides. Under such influence Ukraine could split in to - pro western and pro Russian. this conflict will serve many purposes.

I know that that's always difficult to see all these questions clearly. Manipulation is that.. you think you're having your own ideas but that's not always true. What is shown in the news is only the top of an iceberg so you'll never have the whole knowledge of a problem. They only show you what they want and, sometimes, they show things only to make you turn your head in the other way..

That's why I don't trust the news I hear on tv/radio/news sites/newspapers. I try to get all side of an argument then I form my opinion. i never jump when they tell me to jump.

I know that we are not told all the facts and I doubt there will be a time when we will be however we have to try and see beyond the lies and doublespeak.

you're right. But you'll never know what really happened so that's impossible to have correct judgments. Globalization only increases the lies.. It's a bigger theatre.

Certain actions lead to certain gain. The side which has the most to gain is the initiator or events.

Like with this conflict. the US has a lot more to gain then Russia thus it's not in Russia's interests to initiate events that will strengthen the positions of its opponents.

Of course I accept that there might be a hidden meaning beneath the hidden meaning and so on but that's what I'd call paranoia. Look at this, this way. A man/woman reads between the lines and think "Aha! that's their plan" then thinks "or maybe it's just what they want me to think" and this can go on forever. So it's best not to go down that road.
