One of the starkest memories I have of visiting Morocco was how dirty everything was, especially by the ocean and the border crossings with Spanish Cueta . As I was leaving the country I recall looking back over the fence and seeing what looked like a mountain of dirty diapers slowly crumbling into the sea. And that was not all, there seemed to be trash everywhere. At the time I thought it was only Morocco, being a third-world country that was dirty, however I have since learned that much of the Arab World is needlessly strewn with garbage. This article about the ancient city of Sidon being overwhelmed by a mountain of trash should sound some alarms, but it won't.To put it into perspective my visit to Jamaica, another third-world country saw a very resourceful people recycle anything they can. I was surprised that I did not see the pollution I assumed to see in all poor countries. Sure there are plenty of dirty spots in Jamaica, but you won't see mountains of garbage just sitting there like in Morocco. Jamaicans squeeze every useful bit out of their land and resources, roads are not strewn with wreckage, shacks and huts are small and poor but clean.

Tensions continue to mount in the three way stand-off between Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela over Colombia's raid to kill FARC leader Raul Reyes. Things are starting to get real messy and if the sabre-rattling does not stop, we may have a real war in South America. http://www.angryjed.com/2008/03/will-war-erupt-in-south-america.html
Hillary and Obama really went at it in this video of the South Carolina Democratic debate. Wow, it's getting personal and the Clinton's are starting to show their true colors - which apparently is White Trash. Hey I love Bubba for his foreign policy moves and his economic genius, but if the Clintons were living below the poverty line they would be the types of people that would run into your car to sue you or pretend to slip on a wet supermarket floor. These kinds of attacks are making Obama look even better and making Hillary look like "more of the same" from Washington. While Obama
This problem is not just Arab World related. I lived for some time in Greece, and their cultural attitude towards garbage cleaning is also calm. May be, it is part of the Mediterran mentality (I saw the same attitude in Egypt as well), but what about African countries, far away from Medirerran Sea and Arab World? No, it is partially cultural issues. Not every community has cultural obsession with garbage cleaning. Partyially, it is related how rich the country is, and how corrupted are the government officials. Good thing is that countries that realize the magic of the tourist money, incvest in the cleaning to attract more visitors.
good point about the possible mediterranean attitude - parts of sicily suffer the same fate. I thought it might be about how rich the country is, but then I went to poor jamaica where the people recycle everything useful. it must have to do with the cultural mindset...
The "garbage industry" can be very profitable. Not many believe that because it's garbage but in reality it's worth millions or more.
Concerning garbage pollution. Every country has its polluted parts. In some countries you just can't see them.
not only the Arab world almost all the over the world the countries are pollutted.
