What more can be said of this brief news story? Israel is not planning for any peace deals with the Palestinians in 2008 and that is a sad, sad admission. How can a statement like this do anything but make things worse? When the biggest bully in the region says flat out "peace? well maybe next year" how is that going to stop the rocket attacks or bombings? Here's how: It won't, And that is just fine with the Israeli Government, who apparently believe that peace in the region does not favor them.After all if there is no more fighting then it's hard to justify the $1billion Israel gets from the US every year. Nor does it foster the huge arms deals that Israel has with countries in Europe as well as the Ministry of Defense deals with China . If you ask me this is war profiteering - the "haves" that are making money hand over fist in a war zone. Meanwhile the "have-nots" on both sides have to live in fear while avoiding rockets and suicide bombers or armored bulldozers and rubber bullets. Peace would help the downtrodden, of which most are Palestinian and it seems that the leaders of Israel have no interest in helping their situation.

I have a friend - Hassan - from Haifa. He is Arab Christian. Every day he starts from the blessing to Israel Government with all the wishes to KILL all the terrorists. He knows, if Israel will be wiped out, he will be next in line to be killed. His brother was blasted in Lebanon by Hezbollah "Freedom Fighter". His neigbor's niece, 19 years old, also Arab Christian, was blasted by the Arab terrorist in the cafe. She is not on the lists of the vistims. She was lucky to survive. Was she, really? She will be in the bed FOREVER, because the only undamaged part of here body is brain.
Do not tell me that Israelian government enjoying this war, and the peaceful Palestionians want just peace! You could bring this BS to the masses before 9/11. Now, the entire World is in the war, and Israel is the only US ally in the Middle East. Tomorrow, it will be destroyed, USA will be next...
BTW, number of Arabs going as volonteers in the Israelian Army, is growing. You need to be very brave to go to the Israel Army. Becaue your family can be easily destroyed by Hamas activists. It is only Jews can stand on the peaceful demonstration in Haifa during the latest War in Lebanon. Hezbollah is launching rockets, and these stupid Jews are standing with posters: "Do not touch Lebanon!" They can say, what they what. But if Arab says he supports Israel, he is in trouble. So, how should they opposite all these PLO, Hamas, Hezbollah, Jihad, to risk their families well-being and to sign in the Military? And, it is not for money. They get almost nothing, because Army is based on the mandatory military service.
well thought-out comments. But I feel that the regular people on both sides are the ones who suffer while the powerful on both sides have a vested interest in keeping the status-quo. Powerful comments by the Israeli gov't saying no peace in '08 can only fuel the fires of war.
What does your Arab Christian friend think of Israeli helicopters spraying the church of the nativity with bullets during that standoff a few years back? The terrorists were in the church but they shot up the convent, where the priests live. Israel has refused to pay for damages they caused to the priceless art. How do I know? My friend is the church's accountant.
do I support terrorists? no, but I'm not so naive to think that Israel cares about anything but self-preservation and a reliable source of fresh water (located in the west bank).

Hi Jed,
In every war there are no right side and wrong side. Both parties can be accused of war crimes. I just wanted to show a different viewpoint. It is very questionnable, who and why has more moral rights for the land. Current status however came from mostly historical perspectives:
1. During WWII Arabs mostly supported Nazis (Rommel in Africa), while Jews (besides those 6 millions that were killed or burned in Concentration camps) were on the coalition side. When war ended, they had better positions for bargaining.
2. When the idea of dividing the land between Arabs and Jews was supported by UN, Jews agreed, and Arabs refused, which started the conflict.
3. All the next wars were initiated by Arab nations, and in spite of the overwhelming majority, the Israel won.
So, is not that enough to agree finally that Israel has survival rights? Or, if USA is so nice and law obedient, let's give back California to Mexica. Why not? Historically, it was Mexican land.
Again, I am not looking into the individual crimes from both sides. I claim, that no matter who is right, and who is wrong, USA should support Israel, as they do now. My personal opinion is that not always US is doing right thing. Serbia bombardment was completely unjustifiable (again, my personal opinion), I consider Iraq as a big mistake. But with Israel, we just have no choice.
Ganza, and I agree with you 100%. Every mother dream that her kids will live in a peaceful country. But, generations are passing there, and the situation is getting only worse.
