This CBS News video not only explains just how much more gas costs in the UK compared to here in the US - $9 a gallon! It also explains in layman's terms some of the factors behind the surging oil prices and the sagging dollar. So it's not just you America that is struggling to live with crazy gas prices, Europe has always had expensive gas - but this is getting ridiculous, especially for the cab drivers. The main difference in how the two landmasses are handling this crisis is that much of Europe has very good public transportation as well as established freight rail. Even though there are more trucks on the road than ever, Europeans are not nearly as dependant upon their cars and trucks as the US. Many Europeans do not even need to own a car, and those that do are not driving 8 cylinder Cadillacs. Here in America not only does everyone own a car, but many of us would be stranded without them - public transportation is a joke outside the largest cities. Not to mention that giant, dirty and inefficient Semi-Trailers haul a major portion of our food and goods that were once hauled by freight rail.
I've been thinking about why do American cars have such big engines. Most of American cars have 3L or bigger. I think is is because the distances are greater in American than in Europe. where cars have even 1.0L engines and few are driving cars with more than 3L engines. Diesel is also preferred.
In the days of cheap gas, american cars were sold on power and speed. today the suv's are usually sold on storage space and saftey - even though they are not safe.
Most people here that own a truck or suv do not use them for their intended work-related purposes - they use them like a big car.
Why not buy a nice japanese car (not europea they are nice but very expensive in the US) and not a toyota prius (hate this car) For example a honda civic or mitsubishi lancer.
I'm not sure if they have it in the US but why not make a special tax for people driving suvs. Or reople who drive suvs in cities will have to pay more.
erm... If rich people are getting tax breaks and middle class are not getting anything for living more frugally then the gap between the rich and poor will grow. I don't think that the Bush administration is so dumb not to see this, so they must be doing it on purpose.
