Do you ever wonder why the US is no longer top dog? One reason is that we refuse to learn or speak any other language than our fractured version of English. American kids can barely speak their native tongue thanks to IM and slack-jawed rappers that make it a point to not speak correctly. Our Government agencies like the CIA and FBI can't find enough Arabic speakers to help in the War on Terror. In the meantime, students in Great Britain will be able to take Mandarin Chinese to help keep their country relevant once China becomes the world's major power.There is nothing more pathetic than watching fat, fanny-pack wearing, American tourists in matching outfits trying to communicate in another country. And they are the ones who get mad that nobody understands them, next time buy a phrase book fatty! Nobody is expecting Americans to speak their language fluently, but it does show an enormous amount of goodwill when you at least try.

I've never been too vocal about the Tibet movement, probably because of the Dalai Lama's penchant for hanging out with celebrities to get his message across. I'm sure His Holiness is a great guy but the pandering to the Richard Gere types just rubs me the wrong way.However, with the recent clashes in Tibet with Chinese authorities, it shows me that maybe average Tibetans and the monks are getting fed up with the lack of progress. yeah, the americans think that if their language is the most spread language around the world, they don't need to know any other languages, because anywhere they go, everybody speaks english. i might say that i was surprise to hear that people in california don't know spanish at all.
Why do American need to speak Chinese. In our schools 60% students are already Chinese emigrants (Silicon Valley). If needed, they can provide any communicational channel. Any action should have a reason. When it will be economically valuable quality for American to know foreign languages, they will do. I can fluently speak 4 languages, but that did not help to get food in non-tourist town in China, as they were so afraid from foreigners... In Ecuador or Costa Rica, they will do everything to communicate with you, even without mutual language. Because they need your money. Yes, money is a great communicator. When Chinese store owner will want money more that will be scared, he will undestand what you want for sure.
Regarding business communication, English is still considered as a main communication language.
Not big deal! If US loses its leading potential, it is not because of the foreign language speakers deficiency.
So what do you think? keep the status quo of letting someone else do it. Money is a communicator when someone needs your money. The US won't lose it's top seat because of language, but it won't regain that seat either by making an even more powerful China try do things the US way. At some point the economic pendulum will swing and it will be us jumping through hoops.
USA will loose its top seat no matter what in near future (to China and India). Many economists predict that. So what? I like living in USA (I lived in 3 other countries before - so, I can compare) not because it is the World leading economic nation, but because I like living here. I will let China be the leader, if I have my bread and butter. I work with Chinese customers a lot. They have enormous potential, but the most educated and smart are coming here to raise their kids.
Most americans don't leave their state let along the country. So there isn't any reason for them to learn a new language. Businesses can just hire someone to translate.

very true about america not learning any other languages. How ever I think at the UK is quickly heading towards the same path.
